This past year, LSU changed its penalty structure for substance abuse to be more lenient.

Still not as lenient as Bama's drug and gun policy but is a step in the right direction.
NCAA Denies LSU Cornerback Kristian Fulton's Appeal of Two-Year Ban

Sports Illustrated has obtained documents that outline a change implemented this past year to LSU’s penalty structure for substance abuse. The school’s new policy allows for an extra failed test before penalties are handed out. A player can now fail three tests, not two, before a fourth positive results in a 10% loss of competition (in football, one game). The new addition to the structure is termed a “first term enrollee” test, presumably for all new players.
Another change was made, too: If a player goes four consecutive months without a negative test, he’s allowed to expunge one previous positive test on his cumulative career record. In the previous policy, a player needed to be drug-free for six months to expunge an old positive test. The rest of LSU’s drug testing penalty policy remained the same: a fifth positive costs a player 50% of competition, and a sixth is a potential dismissal, pending an appeal. It’s unclear whether these two changes are directly related to Fulton’s case.

MLB, the NBA and the NFL consider cheating on a drug test as a positive test that carries a penalty for such an act. MLB has the most severe punishment, with a half-season (80-game) suspension for a first failed test. The NFL’s is a six-game suspension, or 37.5% of the regular season.

The NCAA strengthened its penalty structure on tampering in 2012 from one similar to professional leagues—a one-year ban. The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports made that decision because its members believed cheating “should be sanctioned more seriously” than a positive test, said Mary Wilfert, the NCAA associate director of prevention and health promotion.

If I remember correctly Ole Miss is the most lenient followed by UF.
If memory serves me correctly again, LSU and Bama had exactly the same policy for a very long time. I think the recent changes to ours put us back on equal footing, almost.

Why bother have a policy?
I can fail a test in January and, if I’m not an idiot between then and April it disappears? Even still, I can be a complete loser four times before there’s any consequences?
Just eliminate the test and now you don’t have to worry about tampering.

Agreed. Especially for something more and more states are legalizing all the time. the NCAA needs to rethink the whole thing.

This isn’t NCAA’s policy. Each school makes their own policy in regards to narcotics.
The test Fulton tried to cheat, which was administered by NCAA to their policy, was testing for PED’s, NOT narcotics. And yes, the NCAA should most definitely have a uniform testing policy for PED’s since that can give a player/team an advantage over another.

Because it is a violation of federal law (which overrides state law). I guess you smoke weed every day lamenting over all of the thugs in Angola.

Now they can hand out in Tigerland and not worry.

I think that substance abuse is a little strong for smoking weed.

He THOUGHT it was for weed, therefore he panicked, and tried to cheat the test.
That is why I want to, or one of the MANY reasons, I want to take a sharpened shank-spoon to the compliance department. Not only was he uneducated on the NCAA tests, all the other players around him were too.

I get that. And I agree that while Fulton was completely in the wrong for attempting to cheat, LSU greatly screwed up in not properly educating him.
But the point of post was in response to Ree’s assertion that the NCAA needs to revisit policy in light of weed being legalized in other states.

With everything student athletes give to their respective universities it's wrong to deprive them of a major part of the college experience.
Sure, test for PEDs and real drugs like crack and heroin, but let them smoke a little weed.

It is a violation of federal law but it's a very outdated law. This still doesn't excuse anyone from failing or trying to fake a test though because a player needs to decide what's more important, smoking weed or playing football. It's really simple and rules are rules, besides it's not like weed is addicting and they have to have it.
