Examples of countries with much higher per capita income with no tariffs on imports to speak of??? Yes I think that is appropriate to this discussion.
But it is contradictory to your argument. Your argument is to let countries impose tariffs on US goods at will. How does that bring us closer to legit free trade?

Let's all remember Trump said the goal was the end of all tariffs and subsidies.
Somebody wake me up when he goes to Iowa and says he is ending the crop insurance subsidy program and stopping the ethanol mandate.
I don't recall Trump mentioning subsidies, but i see where it comes from. If tariffs are the reason we have to subsidize the farmers, then an elimination of tariffs should equal an elimination of subsidies. But you know the "poor farmers" will fight to keep that gravy train tooth and nail.
The difference, is that the POTUS can't unilaterally remove subsidies. All of these subsidies are snuck in bills approved by Congress. He can veto any pork laden bills however. Tariffs, on the other hand, can directly be handled by POTUS, as we have seen.

I am afraid we have started a war we do not have balls to finish and it is causing real pain to real people and the loss of real opportunities.
The EU disagrees. Give it time, i'm pretty confident they will back down (the chinese).

I am dug in on the fact that tariffs are bad

They have deep currency reserves and a command economy

You rant about the tariffs being temporary as if that is good then you rant about needing tariffs to because we taking it in the shorts.

Ending the trade deficit is not a goal I am concerned with. It is not a problem.

so you don't acknowledge that we have been at a competitive disadvantage in regards to trade? trump has been making all this up
No

We are growing as an economy despite their tariffs.
not before trump got into office and started reversing our policies
You are really are in denial. Just look at the numbers please. That is just an uneducated statement and a waste of thread followers time to read.

Since you will be paying more for goods you buy you will have less to spend on higher value goods and it will damper the economy.
which is literally the opposite of what's been happening as has been pointed out to you repeatedly in this thread
You are completely clueless. But let's get this out there for the world to see. You are saying right here in this post that tariffs are not going to raise prices to US consumers.
Are you going to stand by that?

These LNG projects are multi-billion dollar ventures that take years to get financed and built.
None I know of are built without customer contracts in place before construction begins. Kind of like pipelines in America.
Not sure the handful of companies who have means to build LNG would trust China and their Tariff to hold for years into the future.

he will never get it. some of our tariffs MAY stay. he is too obtuse to realize we have had tariffs even if LOWER than others on certain sectors prior to this. some may need to stay and some may go away if others agree to free trade in those specific SECTORS.

Dude, what do you think is going to happen? Even if China removes all tariffs, the central bank will still control the value of the yuan. And they will continue to subsidize the shite out of their industries.
China would have to change so many things to create a more level playing field. Trump's Chinese tariffs have been basically offset by nothing more than a change in currency value.

LNG is a commodity and we have a competitive advantage. The demand is and will be huge.
We want China's business.

In the meantime, we penalize US consumers (including commercial) for buying foreign products.

Not at all. Those countries have no import tariffs. I don't know how the goods they sell are tariffed in other countries. No doubt somebody is tariffing electronics from Singapore. They make my point.

That is exactly what he said and those EU and Canadian tariffs hit primarily agricultural goods. You are correct it would be politically impossible for Trump to end the ag subsidies and thus the tariffs will not come down.
There is a vice premier in China that wants the tariffs to come down. Enforcing intellectual property in a stronger way would benefit China. Both of these things are to our advantage BUT we will not MAKE them do anything nor should we expect whatever they do to be something we can depend on remaining in place.
Given their rising wealth and competition from lower cost countries like Viet Nam I think their willingness to continue unbridled subsidies of their industries will diminish. NONETHELESS we should take advantage of them and buy the stuff they will sell too cheap.

HOLD IT!!
Are Trumpkins moving the bar?? Has the goal changed? Are you saying Trump has started a trade war that will not result in free trade?? What specific sectors are the ones that are important to Trumpkins?? Let me guess--those that get union votes in the upper midwest and PA??
Posted on 8/6/18 at 10:54 am to I B Freeman
Hold it? Questions? More? Less? The same? Are tariffs permanent?
Posted on 8/6/18 at 10:56 am to Jbird
How you coming on that explanation of the impact of trade deficits on the dollar big boy??
Posted on 8/6/18 at 11:01 am to Tiger Roux
Any reduction in the trade deficit over the next few years will be due to oil and gas exports as we are becoming an important world wide exporter.
