HAVANA (Reuters) - Communist-run Cuba will officially recognize private property, something it has long rejected as a vestige of capitalism, under a new constitution that also creates the position of prime minister alongside the president, state media reported on Saturday.
quote:
Granma said it enshrined recognition of both the free market and private property in Cuba’s new Magna Carta.

Apart from introducing the position of prime minister, dividing the roles of head of state and head of government, the new constitution makes the president head of the assembly and imposes a term limit on the presidency of two consecutive five-year periods.
Castro, who together with his older, late brother Fidel Castro ruled the country for nearly 60 years, had proposed the limit in 2011, as part of a bid to modernize the political system.

But why would they abandon a key socialist principle? They have the opportunity to get it right this time.

So ANOTHER failed utopia falls victim to the evils of capitalistic opportunity.
Imagine that.
And just for an added bonus because he is such a flaming insufferable pussy:

It’s almost as if socialism and capitalism isn’t a binary yes or no thing, and that the economies of different governments are a sliding scale between the two. Not a single country on earth is purely socialist in practice. Not a single country on earth is purely capitalist.

I doubt they give back the property they stole.
Why would any western country invest to develop property there? Same for Venezuela. Unfortunately Venezuela once had a chance then came Chavez and Maduro.
If tomorrow either country made private property protection a priority it would take 50 years before any investor felt confident to invest at the true value of property there. Oh there will development but not at the value the same development would be worth in a proven private property country.

In Latin America, Cuba’s health care system is very well respected. I don’t really see the point here. Depending on where you fall on the economic spectrum, healthcare here can be pretty spotty.

So the Bacardi family will get their rum factory back?
How is this going to work for all the family's that left in 1960? They want their property back.

The argument will always be what is the correct thermostat setting.

Where are you getting your data? The honest, reliable Cuban government?

This is a thread about private property in Cuba. Not healthcare

It's a good start. When discussing libertarian philosophy IRL some people get stuck on my 'private property = liberty' synonym. There is no such thing as a free society that doesn't respect private property rights. And it starts with self ownership.

Well, it'll be interesting to see how exactly this will be instituted. Seems like a drive for foreign investors and a perk for the governmental elite, at least at the start.
Maybe the "free market" will allow for "private property" for the regular folk, but I have doubts - a lot of barriers of entry to overcome.
