The LSU-Alabama rematch helped put a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths that helped bring about the 4 team playoff, at least for a lot of folks outside the SEC.

But the 42-14 thrashing of #1 Notre Dame by Bama in 2012 didn’t leave a sour taste in people’s mouths? After the number of teams that had to lose for Bama to get bumped up to #2?

The real question is, if LSU loses a close game in Tuscaloosa and Bama goes on to win the SECCG, does LSU get a bid to the natty?

Methinks not.

It boggles my mind that people really think a “computer” formula is some objective truism.

Ever heard of Google?

If the NCAA really wanted to get it right, they'd consult Google about developing an algorithm similar to RPI but for football.

It was basically being double or arguably triple counted though. The BCS formula had a separate SOS formula and all the computers factored it and yes so do the humans. Or Hawaii would have been #1 in 2007.

Sure, SOS was always one algorithm of each computer's average, but the BCS formula became more weighted towards the human polls after 2003, so I'm not clear on your point.

Eliminating SOS as a stand-alone factor in the BCS formula like that was still a knee-jerk reaction to the uproar about USC and Oklahoma.

For all the griping about the committee what difference do you think some magic formula would have produced?

I still prefer the application of both. I don't think a magic formula exists because there will always be some unforeseen circumstance in college football that opens itself up to debate. That doesn't mean you have to be totally reliant on a committee of people.

Not a Notre Dame fan. Any time they're halfway good, they're overrated. All that year showed was the a 4 team playoff would have been a better one than the 2 team BCS. I suspect that's true for most years.

And an 8 or 6 team playoff might produce a different champion than a 4 team one does.

Every other division of NCAA football settles it on the field, with a real playoff and with much less of the beauty contest than FBS uses to pick the teams.

You’re crazy if you think not. We played Oregon, at WVU, and beat the hell out of everyone on the schedule except Bama. We would have got in

So you are saying that Okie State was a better team than Bama that year??????

Because IF you are... YOU are A dummy.............

I still don’t see why you object so much to the committee?
you might have me confused with another poster. I don't object to the committee. They're far better than polls and computers. So I like the committee.

I just think an 8 team playoff is better and to give auto bids to P5 champs.

That’s why the BCS rankings combined both.

It combined two human polls with six computers using very unique and complex algorithms to balance out the bias of the human element with the objectivity of the computers.

And the polls were given more weight.

human polls are a complete joke. Too affected by where teams start in the preseason (what kind of poll ranks teams BEFORE they've played a single game?). And most pollsters actually put very little effort into their votes. They don't have time to actually analyze all the games and throw it together in a few minutes based only on final scores and their prior week votes.

The polls are terrible, and have been for decades.

But the committee is far, far different than the polls.

Agreed, but the BCS had the Harris Interactive poll after 2004, which was kind of a precursor to the current committee. At least every school had a say in who was selected as a voter and the poll didn't begin until mid-October.

Now we have a situation like college basketball where it seems to vary from year to year which aspects of team resumes are valued more. And the committee is heavily weighted with P5 membership.

Was a big factor. The country was tired of SEC dominance and with two teams that close in talent, the winner of the first game doesn't stand a chance.

the loser of the first game changes strategy and the winner doesn't...

will scream this until the day I die, but the BCS was not created simply to pick the two best teams to play for the title. The BCS was created to ensure that conference bowl tie ins would not prevent the best teams from all conferences from having the chance to play each other. The Big 12 Champion should have had the chance to play the SEC Champion to determine the National Champion. Alabama had their chance to stake a claim and couldn’t do it. They then sat at home while LSU beat top 10 UGA to earn a conference title and OSU beat a top 10 Oklahoma to earn their own. Alabama shouldn’t have even been in the conversation unless there were no other conference champs with 1 loss.

not to mention, both of those games were absolute blowouts. all week, the only thing ESPN et al. talked about was that Okie st had a chance to make a statement, and play themselves in. so on saturday they go out and drag their dicks across the face of a top 10 team, in the dying embers of an era where “every game matters”, and still get left out.

frankly it all comes down to why that field goal in Ames wasn’t reviewed, but I digress. if the selection committee existed back in 2011, Bama is still getting the nod. because....$$$$

No, but it def did expose it's biggest faults. We are biased because we are SEC fans. But the rest of the world hated it.

See this is the f-in gump loving revisionsist history bulls---.

(Know it was you bisceaux but the writer of the article)

Had LSU played a 4-7 alabama team and won 9-6 it would have been "escaping" with a victory. But this was the "game of the century". 1 vs 2. Alabama had the home field advantage and the f-in lost.

LSU's "reward" for winning the game on the road was to get to play Georgia for a chance to get to make the national championship game.

Bama's "punishment" for losing was being gifted a spot in the national championship game.

This - along with Roy Jones Jr and maybe the 72 Olympic basketball team is the greatest travesty in the history of competitive sport.
