the best in terms of glass quality. I shoot a Swarovski Z8

Schmidt & Bender makes a pretty good scope.

yes, but most people aren't going to drop $4000 on a scope. I don't recommend it to people unless I know they're ballers

I thought they were made by Swarvo. Never really checked the validity of that as I've never really heard anything great about them. Hunted with some guys in Texas that had their Binos.

I stand corrected. They aren't overpriced German shite. They're appropriately priced Chec shite.

And, I'm just stirring shite for the most part.

They refuse to innovate though. They used to be top dogs and because they secured their status for so long, they never saw the need to change much. Also, I hear their service department sucks. Schmidt is Nightforce build quality with Swaro glass quality but they still wouldn't be my first pick if I was dropping that much coin.

Nah, they are their own company. I just bought a Meostar R2 2.5-15X56 last season. It's amazing. It's about $1k less than the Swaro Z6i in the same mag range but the difference in glass quality is negligible imo. Looking through both it is honestly hard to tell a difference. I'm sold on Meopta for life and will continue to buy them for future hunting rigs.

The US military does not agree with this. Look at what sits atop the new Heckler and Koch G28 used by elite sniper units.

1. Getting contracts doens't mean shite. As someone with several family members in defense contracting, there is a lot of behind the scenes bullshite that goes on in contracts. This isn't to say Schmidt is bad at all, but contracts are not automatically indicative of quality or performance (see the recent Sig MH17 contract)
2. They don't do much because they keep getting contracts. They are super rugged and reliable optics with fantastic glass but because of this they don't really change much. They should be the guys trying new scope erectors and trying to make shorter optics with better performance and more wide-range erectors. Like a short 1-10x24 or something would be amazing. Swaro will make it before them and they don't get military contracts for scopes as far as I am aware (although Khales does).

Your right about that but not to get in a pissing match about it but I know a few guys who could have any scope in the world and their lives actually depend on equipment being able to function in harsh conditions. And they all swear by Schmidt & Bender scopes. Opinions vary though and Swarovski also makes great products but to say it is hands down the best is false. They do make great binoculars of which I own a few.

Nobody has said they are bad scopes. Everyone has anecdotal military stories, they would probably say the same thing about Kahles if that’s what they were given And government contracts aren’t always indicative of highest quality, but y’all already had that discussion.

S&B is obviously in the same tier, you know I know that. I’m not going to recommend a line like S&B when the OP said he is on a budget though. A very small subset of shooters have the financial means to afford a S&B scope, so it’s not a realistic recommendation 99.9% of the time. Swarovski and NF have more affordable lines that people can realistically consider.

S&Bs are certainly better constructed and built to last through the toughest shite on earth, but I’d take Swaro glass, weight, and customer service all day. The 2 brands are built for different things.

OP said he has incredible long range vision, I did also when I was 30. Now at 56 not so much and it doesn't get better as you get older.

Buy a scope with more features than you think you need, you will grow into it later.

There's lots of great optics choices out there nowadays. Budget and how its going to be used is going to dictate a lot. Swarovski, Nightforce, Zeiss(not the Terra),upper end Leupolds, upper end Bushnell, Meopta. All make excellent scopes for most people's uses. I will say Leupold is dead last when it comes to how much scope you get relative to price in my book. Their features vs cost is a lot worse than the majority of scope mfg's nowadays. I've got several different brands of scopes on my rifles and all ended up on their respective rifles through a lot of trial and error and weeding through scopes that I didn't end up liking. IMHO you won't beat a Meopta for the money in a pure hunting scope. The Nightforcve SHV F1's are a great scope for the money when it comes to a combo scope for long range shooting as well as hunting. For purely a long range optic your checkbook is the limit. What rifle its going to be sitting on would help a lot in getting pointed towards the right scope. Not going to do us much good to recommend a Nightforce if you're going to put it on papaw's old 30-30

Here is a post from a competitive shooter and long range hunter. It's a few years old, but explains a lot.

bayoushooter

A budget is going to be a huge start, there are plenty of quality scopes all over the price range.

I am soon to be 59 years old. My long range vision ,has stayed with me.

I was having a problem with reading small print, close up,
but I worked at getting my blood pressure down, and that cleared up.

( This probably doesn't belong here, but you guys should cut down as much on salt as possible)
Start reading those labels on the foods that you buy, and try to choose the ones with lower sodium.

Don't pick up the salt shaker. Find a low sodium seasoning instead.

For me, Badia complete seasoning works well. It's got a lot of garlic and stuff, and not much salt
Tastes great on everything, especially tomatoes.

Exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.
Gonna start reading through it slowly.
In his first few lines, he made it clear, that he will answer questions, that I don't even know how to ask.

The ultimate goal, is to find out my own capabilities. and not to be a sales agent for any company.
