Is it customary to tip the car hops at Sonic?

I was talking to a coworker and they mentioned how the carhops at Sonic expect to get tips, but I've never done so since it's part of their job to bring the food/drinks

I do if I have cash which is rare. They should let me tip on a card if they are expecting it.

Why wouldn't you ? They bring out your food the same as any waiter in a restaurant.
