So a long time popular professional golfer intentionally cheats on national tv in a major golf tournament and some of you don't think there is anything wrong with it? Golf is a game of honor and respect for the rules.
Before you respond to try to correct my use of the word, "cheater", you should know that the definition of a cheater, according to Websters, is "a person who acts dishonestly in order to gain an advantage." PM admitted on national TV that he engaged in his activity to gain an advantage. It was bush league and he should have been DQ'ed.
What if his push putt, which was hit while the ball was in motion, went in the hole? I realize he got a 2 shot penalty, but would that have counted?
Why wait until the ball is 3 feet past the hole, what if he tapped it right behind the hole?
What if his caddie intentionally stopped the ball with his foot just 6 inches from the hole?
What if he stopped a moving ball before it was about to go in the water or a hazard? A 2 stroke penalty might be better than a water ball penalty depending upon the drop zone.
There are so many things wrong with what he did. The only comforting thought, when the PGA and the R&A change or clarify the rule (which I believe they will do), the new rule will be called the Mickelson rule to remind us of the arse that he made of himself in the US Open.
Here is a link to an SI article that echos my sentiments.
Just to point out one of the dumber aspects of your terrible post,

This is contemplated by the rules as well. Guess what? DQ. It's not a stroke. You are dumb.

And the rule is a 2 shot penalty, which he was assessed. He even reached out to he USGA to see about whether he should be disqualified, and they said no.
To me no different than an intentional foul or intentional pass interference. Yes, you are knowingly breaking the rules, but strategically, it makes sense in the situation. You take the penalty and move on. If the penalty is not right, change the rules.

I agree that the over reaction by the public is a little much. After hearing all the noise, I watched a replay and was like, “That’s it?”
I’m willing to bet that the majority of people burning him on social media really have zero interest in golf yet we’re forced to cater to these self absorbed response seekers.
I get what he did was wrong, but after hearing the noise, I expected to see him throwing clubs, dropping f bombs, and crotch chopping the rules official.

Agreed
I'm a big of Phil fan as there is.. He shouldn't have done that, and when I defend him people automatically think that I thought it was ok. I will always say that you finish that hole out the right way. It wasn't worth the backlash he is getting from it now.
This guy wasn't going to win the golf tournament (the tournament he desperately wants to win) and lost his cool on a pin placement that many people didn't like that day. The word "cheater" being thrown at him is laughable. He isn't out there discretely improving lies or anything like that trying to cheat his way back into a golf tournament. He took a personal stand basically saying "I'm too far back to mess with this crap" and took his penalty and expected to move on. In the media of 2018, that isn't going to happen.
The mess he is taking from the media is blown way out of proportion and unfortunately for Phil isn't going away soon.

Just because he did it out of frustration doesn't mean he didn't take a calculated penalty. What's the difference than that and taking a penalty from an unplayable lie?
