AMC Unveils Answer to MoviePass: $20 Subscription Plan

quote:

On Tuesday, the theater chain will begin offering guests the chance to see up to three movies per week for the monthly fee of $19.95. The offering is being run through its loyalty program AMC Stubs, and has been dubbed AMC Stubs A-List. In a clear dig towards MoviePass, a thorn in the exhibition business’ side because of its discounted ticketing, AMC calls its pricing “sustainable.”
quote:

AMC’s program offers some features that MoviePass has not matched. Namely, customers can see movies in premium formats such as IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and RealD.

plus but movies pass is 10 bucks. 1 movie a day. even though they removed the ability to see repeat viewings which IMO will kill Movie Pass.

If Cinemark can rise their subscription program to match this I’m sold.

It'll depend on what AMC's are like in your market.

The IMAX/Dolby/3D and the reserved seating are pluses for AMC.

The fact that you have unlimited movies and can use them at any theater are pluses for MoviePass.

If I was an IMAX guy who just wanted to see major releases, I could see switching to the AMC thing.

I don't understand why these theater chains have to have an "answer" to what Movie Pass is doing (I admit that I did not read the article, so if this is answered there, then, well, I'm sorry).

These theaters are getting paid for each ticket the same as they would if a patron was paying them directly, right? MoviePass is the entity that is taking the financial hit when someone decides to go to a movie. The theaters get paid regardless, and they are getting people in the venue to buy concessions.

Is my understanding wrong? It seems that AMC is only hurting themselves by offering this.

This is really cool and hopefully sustainable. Even with MoviePass, I just don't have the time to see more than 12 movies in a month, so it's not like I'd be missing out on anything with this plan. The bonuses of IMAX are really appealing. If Regal wasn't so rampant here, I'd be all over this.

AMC trying to get serious. Our local AMC is really nice, all reserved recliner leather seats, has 3d and imax too, no dolby vision/atmos quite yet though.

My wife and I got the moviepass $89.99/yearly membership last year in October ($7.50/mo). We see 2 to 3 movies a month right now. So we're due up again this October to decide what we want to do. This is obviously way more expensive at $19.99/mo, but the premium features (compared to moviepass) are pretty nice - buy in advance online, 3d/imax included.

Sinema is only $14.99/mo, but that's for just 3 movies a month. Which is fine by me. Also has access to all movie theaters, not just AMC. So basically I'd be paying $5 extra a month over Sinema if I wanted to see more than 3 movies in a month, which I'm not sure I've even done since starting moviepass. Sinema might be next subscription service.

I know AMC doesnt "allow" premiere members with moviepass to get the 100 points per dollar on movie tickets, but it still works every time for me at the kiosk stations where I always buy. I wonder if AMC will start to crack down even more on that though

From an e-mail from the CEO to current A-List members:
quote:

We are holding the line on the pricing of A-List. It goes without saying that for all of you of course, our 12-month price and benefits guarantee from date of enrollment will be fully honored. Your monthly price of $19.95 plus tax will remain unchanged for a full year from the date of your joining. In 35 states, the monthly price for new or renewing members will also stay unchanged at $19.95 plus tax. Given the popularity and growth of A-List, we are making a modest price adjustment in a select number of locations. Beginning January 9 of 2019, in 10 states (Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington) and the District of Columbia, the monthly price for new members (and for renewing members 12 months after they signed up initially) will rise only modestly to $21.95 plus tax; while in 5 states (California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York), it will go up to $23.95 plus tax, still a terrific bargain given the cost of individual movie tickets there. Let me reiterate that for you at AMC, your monthly price of $19.95 plus tax will stay intact without change for 12 full months from the date you joined no matter where you live or visit AMC.
