This is what I object to. You dismiss any other jambalaya that doesn't conform to what your local population came up making.
People on the bayou have been cooking jambalaya just as long as the folks around Gonzales, but just chicken would be unthinkable to them. Their's almost always has some seafood.
Jambalaya's been around just as long in New Orleans, too, but tomatoes are traditional in jambalaya there.
I assume people in Ville Platte have been making Jambalaya for a long time, too, and I'll bet their's always has sausage or some other smoked meat.
The Gonzales way isn't the only way to make jambalaya and you can't own the name. Jambalaya is a Louisiana dish and different areas of the state have their variations.
Now I will object to some yankees making up shite like a stew served over rice or having kale and okra in it. Hell even some Louisianians put mushrooms in it.
Rat, it'll be ok
Us "jambalaya" cooks who are going to spend upwards of $400 per contest we enter just need some better defined judging parameters, I think that's all we're saying. I don't think any of us are out to define the dish with absolutes.

But people do. Have 3 awards. One for traditional, one for creative, and one for people's choice.
The king cake fest has this figured out and that's got people claiming traditional when it isn't. I want to come next year for sure. Is there any good cook offs coming up soon in New Orleans? I know oyster fest is next weekend (I think).

Everyone playing fantasy jambalaya will have the same 2 cooks in Heat 2 for sure.

I did a "Disney Jambalaya".
Seriously I did a chicken and sausage jambalaya. I think it should be judged on taste and texture (some people made grits)...but, it was for a good cause so I really did not care who won.
If it was not a fund raiser and they had no sponsors and the prize was cash...I would have been upset.
It was a fund raiser and I had a good time. I'll never complain about that.

Right, I'm sure it was...no doubt. But, you've got to consider competition jambalaya cooks probably enter 5-6 of these a year for various causes...at the end of the day we're in it to win.

Then at the end of the day this event is probably not for you.
If you cook your jambalaya the way you want to cook it and are satisfied with how it turns out, then that in itself should be enough for your own satisfaction. Winning the blue ribbon shouldn’t be the goal. It should be donating your qualifications, time and effort for the cause and realizing the help you are providing actually helps people. I’m sure the guy spent as much money buying par boiled rice, bacon, beef and mushrooms as you did, so why discount him if he is in this for the same reason?
I’ve never been a fan of participation trophy’s but this is not a travel ball tournament. There is a time and place for winning, and those festivals have been mentioned. Yet there is also a time and place for humility while realizing the real winners are the people you helped and their dependence on your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Maybe look at this effort as a tuneup opportunity where you can practice. And how many times do you get to drink beer in practice?

Again, someone was asking for suggestions to expand it and make it grow. I have no problem with leaving it as is, I was just throwing out suggestions in response to asking for advice.

Just wanted to update teams that cooked or people that came. Our primary recipient this year lost her battle with cancer last night. Please keep their family in your thoughts and prayers
