Had a feeling this would eventually be considered.

With all stuff going on, football will be on a major decline.

These changes don't seem so bad, but with the high number of holding and block in the back penalties already on kickoffs, this sounds like it's going to increase penalties further.
And for the curious, the changes are basically no more running starts, no more two man wedges (three man wedges were already gone), and 8 players on the receiving team have to be within 15 yards of the kickoff spot.
And no hitting withing those 15 yards from the kickoff spot. Curious to see exactly what that means (no contact at all or is nudging okay?)
It eliminates the huge heads of steam of two players running full speed at each other (mostly; you still have the returner and two blockers, and whatever guys in coverage go unblocked), but it's going to put guys on opposing teams running side by side a lot, which is going to increase holding and block in the back penalties.
But the alternative is taking the kickoff out of the game. So I guess yay more penalties?

Rather this than no KO at all.

Yeah they stated pretty clearly this has to reduce concussions quickly (I guess within 2 years) or the kickoff is gone.
I mean I'm glad they are trying to save it so I do prefer this over no kickoffs, but I'm just going to expect a penalty on every one now.

I'm sure they are looking at everything they can to lessen their liability . It would not be the same without some form of kickoff.

Yeah the only other thing I can think of is to move the spot even closer and make it a punt instead of a kick off a tee.
That would put the players even closer and you could see more kicks going out of bounds (so maybe they'd have to change the spot from the 40 (iirc) to maybe the 30/spot of the foul if it's further up).
It could also make onside "kicks" more interesting. The kicking team could have more of an advantage now because of the hang time and the fact that they'd all basically be jump ball style recoveries. And that they'd know the direction of where the punt is supposed to go.
Honestly the thought of a punt style kick off has me intrigued now.

The kicking team cannot interfere with the actual receiver until the ball touches the ground. That is why onside kicks are kicked into the ground 99% of the time.

I'm not so sure about that because technically ANY player can be a receiver on a kickoff. I don't think that rule works like it does for punts.
Edit:
Kickoff rules
There are no protections for "receivers" on kickoffs.

It was called against TB a few years ago. Gruden was confirming the call bc the kicker did not kick the ball into the ground and the kicking team blocked the guy parked under the ball. I do not recall if they called for a fair catch first, but I do recall the play bc I was initially pissed TB recovered and it confused the shite out of me.

That's not listed in the rules, but maybe the fair catch rules do carry over?
But I know I've seen plays that were popped in the air (not touching the ground) where guys collide into each other going for the ball and nothing is called.
I don't think the fair catch thing should have been called. I think that was incorrect application of rules.
Edit:
Tried to do some more digging but could only find wiki as a source. It says fair catch rules do apply, but nothing I've seen says you can't hit a player attempting to receive the ball if no fair catch is called.
So if that is the case then yeah punt "kick" offs wouldn't work.

Go ahead and remove the helmets and pads and give them flags now. Thats where this is going. Pussification of America continues. No wonder the audience is leaving in droves. Heading down the same route as NASCAR. Turrible.

They should try this out first

I am ok with this. Anything to lessen injury without messing with the integrity of play is A OK.

The new NFFL, (National Flag Football League). Like concussions only happen on kick offs. Why doesn't the NFL and CBA just make the players sign a waiver stating concussions are an inherent risk associated with their job. Don't sign it, fine, bye Felicia. I'm sure most, or all would assume that risk for their very lucrative paycheck. Just saying.

I doubt the KO will be around for much longer
Posted on 5/4/18 at 2:26 pm to hellsu
I wish the Internet was around when they first started making players wear helmets so we could read how they were killing the game
Posted on 5/4/18 at 2:37 pm to fhsdemonfan
It's funny you say that because I actually HAVE read articles that suggest helmets give players a false sense of security that they can go around banging their heads into shite without any long term damage.

This is getting fricking stupid. Injuries happen football is a collision sport. At the rate they are going tackling will be banned within 10 years.

It's time to just eliminate the kickoff altogether. I'm tired of touchdown-commercial-kickoff-commercial anyway.
