Hot Take: Saints are Planning for Life After Brees

We will need a QB when Brees is gone in about 2 years, however, rebuilding the team doesn't have to come from forcing ourselves into getting "the next big thing." We are solidifying ourselves to have a very good, very young, very cheap defense of the future.
Look at the players on defense on rookie deals this season: Rankins, Davison, Onyemto, Davenport, Hendrickson, Muhammad, Anzalone, Lattimore, Crawley, Bell, and Williams.
Then you have role players here on team friendly deals like Teo, Okafor, PRob, and PJ Williams.
Instead of freaking out, maybe trust that the front office has a plan, and realized that once we lose our HOF QB, we might not outscore everyone, so we damn sure better keep them from scoring.

Yeah, I completely disagree. This move screams planning for life right now with no regard for what is happening in the future.
This team would have absolutely no options if Brees fell off this year. They gave away their ammo. They are absolutely betting on Brees having at least 2 more very good years.

Pretty warm take. I think that's been a general consensus for a minute.

100%
if we're trying to plan for stocking our team for post-Brees, then you don't deal a 5th and 1st to move up for a project
what we did is the literal opposite of long-term planning

A stacked defense and solid run game can help Brees remain effective longer and kick the can down the road a bit farther.

Sure, but let's not act like in two years the cupboard is bear.
A strong D and consistent QB play led the Eagles to a Super Bowl and had the Vikings in the NFC championship. The Pats two years ago threw out random QB's for 4 weeks when Brady was suspended and went 4-0. You don't need a HOF QB to win if the rest of the team is above average, though having a HOF QB certainly helps.

I think it's a little of both. If the saints think he's that good, then he's here to win now and be a solid young contributor on a cheaper deal for the next 5 years, some of which is considered post brees era. Teams that succeed build through the draft, but we gave up another 1st for him. So in one hand, we are thinking right now with the jump, but also think he's good enough to be part of the future core.

Manziel.....just saying! I mean, you LSU homers have been wanting Jamarcus to get a second chance since his fat arse fell off the map! Manziel is a better athlete than Russel ever was! Give CSP a chance to work with him.
Ok, proceed to destroying me........

It screams playing for life right now and the future to me.

It would be a better take to argue that they're planning for a future without Sean Payton.
It's not in Sean Payton's DNA to win with defense.

SFP, you have repeatedly said that the Saints gave up too much for a "project". is he Cam Jordan right now, or course not, but there are professional opinions that disagree with you. Not just knuckleheads on here.
SR Bowl Practice
More Sr Bowl Practice, this one "Breakout player"
And Again
My point is....chill out negative nancy.

I agree with all of this. But that doesn't change what I said. This team no longer has ammo to replace Brees next year if need be, or to attempt to get different top talent. If the pick busts they're stuck with what they have and that's it.
Just so we're clear, I'm not against the pick so much as the trade. And of course if Davenport is what he could be, I probably won't care. Though it really, really matters how soon he comes that.

I think Davenport will be a good player.
Saints are in a "win NOW" mode.
I don't have a problem with making a trade like that for an immediate difference maker if he's the missing piece in a championship run.
By all indications this guy is a project, will probably be behind Okafor, and will not be an immediate difference maker.
That's where I'm torn.

Why do Saints fans want a QB so bad?
I don't understand it.
You have Drew frickin' Brees, who is still putting up world class numbers.
He's good for at least another two years.

For me (I've been driving the "take the successor" bus for several years now) its:
1) Brees is 39. This is a no-brainer.
2) This team has a lot of young talent. I do not want to waste their prime years fricking around with shitty QBs. I want to roll right into the next era still dominating.
3) Understandably Brees has no interest in "teaching" the next guy, but being in the room with him will have benefits. They will learn to be a pro.
Ultimately I am against the idea of waiting until Brees is gone to try and replace him. There are too many benefits to replacing him while he is still here. And this team is stacked anyway, so we are in a good position to do so. Or we were before we traded away all our future ammo yesterday. We're pretty much now all-in on Brees and accepting several 8-8s after.

I am okay with this. We are so close to winning another Super Bowl that I'm okay with going all in now and accepting 8-8 in 2022.
Let's get another banner, boys.

You damn right this move was made to win right now you want to win while you still have a Hall of Fame quarterback

I don’t understand why so many fans think that just because we don’t have a first round pick next year there’s no way we can get a great QB. There’s been plenty of QB’s drafted late and became franchise QB’s. We can still draft a successor next year if we need too.
