Yep, and god forbid, if Jordan and/or Okafor miss time, the Saints just insured DE will not be a complete disaster in 2018-19.
If they are all healthy, Newton/Ryan/Winston better up their life insurance.

I love the pick.
Nothing much really left to say as yall covered it all very well.
Exactly the type talent Ive been wanting on the defensive line for years. Kid is 6'5" 266 and runs a 4.5 forty? Not including other measureables that is incredible enough.

He was terrible in 1-on-1's at the Senior Bowl. I wouldn't expect an immediate impact from him.

HEs got the canvas (body) to be a really good 2 way end. He’ll add good weight & learn some technique & he’ll be a good player for us. His production backs up too. These players don’t grow on trees

He will face nothing but 1 on 1 coverage due to Jordan being on the other side. All he needs to do next year is do what he already knows how to do.

we may be overcalling a pot sized bet on the turn with only a gutshot in a 1:1 SPR pot

Right, like I said last night you’re basically only getting a guy like this with a high pick or splurging in FA. Well we don’t anticipate having either in this last window, so you make a bold move instead of the wishing and hoping we’ve been doing the last few years regarding our pass rush

The tape tells me he can get by on athleticism and hustle even if the technique isn’t there right away
You mean the tape vs CUSA teams?
Everything I’ve read said this guy is a project, so banking on him to have an immediate impact is a huge risk

exactly
i don't dislike the prospect. if we had been at 14-15 organically and had him fall to us i'd be super excited
it's the cost and requirement of immediate, elite impact. it's just not even fair for the kid
like i said last night, there are going to be lots of goalposts moving over this year

In year one we really only need him to play a limited role, the worthiness of the trade up won’t be determined by just next season anyway

It helps Cam Jordan more than anyone. When Okafor went down, Cam had to be all world everything, which he did and played the role well. But realistically, he can’t be expected to do that for a whole season. Look at the game at Los Angeles, hard to be dominant when you are the only stud on the line.
With okafor supposedly healthy, Davenport can come in with fresh legs on downs where all he has to do is beat a 1-on-1 and get pressure.
The price was incredibly high, but if you can win a super bowl, who cares. There just arent that many other holes in this team.

the issue is that we don't have a 1st for an injection into the 2020 team, so how much longer do we expect Brees to be around?
we've neutered our ability to improve in our closing window
also if we stumble next year, then it will clearly determine the value of the trade

Well yeah that’s the gamble and I’m ok with it.

Did anyone pay attention to the Eagles defense last year? They won by having tons of slightly above average to elite defensive lineman constantly rotating. This pick gets our dline closer to that now. We have 3 to 4 good DE's and 3 DT's, we should be fresh enough to wreck the weak O-lines in the NFC South in the 4th quarter bc Cam can get a breather on random plays now if he needs it and not have to worry about the dline going to shite.

the potential value of the 1st in terms of our potential slide isn't a huge issue to me. i still hate trading future 1st for this reason as a general principle.
it's relatively low risk just with an insanely high penalty if it happens

not directed at you, lion.
for those of you that are complaining about this pick, or the price paid for the pick, answer one question. what was available at pick 27 that would have been a sure fire starter? I did not see one. Other rotational guys, but I did not see any one individual that is rated highly enough to have full starting expectations.
regarding the high price paid for the pick, yes it was a lot. no questions asked. However, there is a window to play with an elite qb, and this short time frame must be taken advantage of. but i think people with this opinion are down playing the talent on the present roster, as well as the short Saints draft history of Kevin Ireland.

No one was there to move the needle at 27. Seems as though the saints knew that would be the case, identified their guy, and got him.
this.
Davenport is a win immediately pick.
We went all fuggin in.

I don't see this being a high price. More than likely, we traded a very low 1st round pick to get a play making DE.
When the Jets traded 3 2nd round picks to move up 3 spots in the draft, people are saying how great the move was to get a QB and no one will remember those 3 second round picks. One of those 2nd round picks (37) was 10 spots lower than the Saints' pick (27).
