Targetting Spawning Crappie "help"

I usually bass fish but the crappie are spawning on our lake and my son is out for spring break, any tips on catching them ?
I have two ultra light rod/reel combos we can use.
Thought I might put a cork and minnow and cast next to trees etc in shallow water

quote:That will work. Jig under cork can be used to fish more quickly and cover more water to find fish. Don't just target trees. If there are coves, start in the mouths and work back.

One thing that has worked really well is a slip cork rigged up with a jig head and a 4" zoom lizard. I have caught bass, perch and even catfish during the spawn. The slip cork makes it easy to cast by the bank so you don't spook them.

WE used to catch the hell out of them with a black jig on about 18" of line from the tip of your jig pole. If they're shallow it's fun. This was in almost muddy water.

Shiner under cork or jig under a cork. I like a small beetle soon or roadrunner as well to cover more ground.

im not even going to pretend to know about crappie, but that said, the few times i caught crappie in any numbers it was very similar to the way i target speckled trout.
each time it was near the mouth of a canal where current had moving water and they were holding there at the drop off. a few other times there were under water trees planted and they would be found on the down current side when the tide was flowing.
that is the only way i ever caught them although when i see reports its often people fishing shallow in and around tree limbs and stumps. when i tried that all i catch are brim, white perch, and gogleyes

A jig under a cork with a little piece of worm. Try different colors.

Jig under a cork and pop it. If you can find a top, try just a big or just a shiner with a split shot above the hook. You can also use a slip cork with a rubber band tied for depth and adjust accordingly while using a shiner underneath

Skip the minnow. Just drop jig by trees and tops. Easiest fishing you’ll ever do. Get the grease hot.

Y’all would have more fun watching my young boys and I getting hung up in trees while fishing off the bank. Oh and sometimes their fishing pole winds up in the water or they fight with them even with a hook on them. Or they can chase each other and accidentally knock the shiner bucket over. It’s like a Bill Dance blooper video
