You must have run under 4:10 for the mile in order to do that.

You not only have to have stamina that is built over long distance training, but speed training (i.e. we used to do eight 400 meters in a row that had to be under 60 seconds; run 400, jog slowly 300, walk 100, run 400, etc.).
Correct, it takes a specific type of training to run that fast and more than just being in "good shape". I doubt most professional athletes could do it without significantly changing their training routine. Hell, even elite physique athletes and crossfitters most likely couldn't do at their current body weight, they would need to drop significant muscle mass to even have a chance to pull it off. Competitive milers don't carry tons of muscle mass and aren't pushing big weight in the gym.

Yes, that is a hell of a workout, I'm sure no one at our school could have done that for 8 rounds, maybe 4-5 at most.

I’m stealing this topic from a running board. Let’s say you can give anyone the top notch trainers, cooks, and facilities over any amount of time(no time frame). The question...is every human body, let’s say 18-35, capable of running a 5 min mile. Unlimited resources.
no

My best miles ever were in the Army when I was running 5:45 splits on the two mile run. So, I suppose I coulda been faster for only 1 mile but no way I'd have reached 5 flat and I was in my best shape possible.
I did work with a guy who ran sub-5 splits but that was once in more than 20 years.

80% is a pipe dream.
Hell. 80% of the people who train hard NOW don't run sub 5. And that's people who already have shown at least some talent for running.

Very, very small % of people could do this, even with training. 7 min would be a better benchmark, even then it’s not 80%

Fastest 2 mile run I ever had in the Army was 10:23 so that was 5:12 pace for two miles. But that was pretty much a sprint from start to finish for me. Not sure I could have actually gotten down to a sub 5 pace for a mile.

Probably under 50%. My senior year I ran a 5:25 mile on our last time trial before wrestling season and I was sprinting the whole way. That was the best shape I've ever been in and I'm not sure how I would have shaved another 25 seconds off that time. I

On a track or cross country style? Would be harder if it wasn't on a track.
I did run a sub 5 minute mile in hs for a top cross country program but no way could I do that today even though I am in my mid 20's. It takes a lot of training and maintenance of your body to reach it. Sub 6 is definitely doable for sure if you train correctly and have a solid diet.

The government via the Schwarzenegger fitness initiative for kids and teenagers in the 80's said that if you couldn't run a sub 6 mile - you were obese.
That's only 90 seconds around the track each time.

Calling bullshite on that. A program with 7 sub-5 milers won the toughest district in Texas?
We won a 5A district but it was by no means the toughest. When we went to meets in Houston we were trounced as a team. My point was we had an above average team but only 7 out of 40 guys could get under 5 minutes.
As for the previous poster saying he ran 8 x 400 under 60seconds,its possible as it sounds like they had a long rest between 400s. We typically only had 2 minutes rest between 400s and we ran them in 62 seconds or so.

You couldn't get 10% of the population to do it. Probably couldn't get 5% to be honest. I don't think people understand just how fast this is.
10 min per mile - pretty damn common
9 min per mile - common for those that exercise regularly even if not running
8 min per mile - generally someone has to regularly run to do that
7 min per mile - good running enthusiasts hit this, and this is where the inflection point is. You can get many of the 10 minute milers to reach this with very dedicated training, but getting lower is where the herd thins
6 min per mile - very few people do it, and not many others are capable of it. At my best level of fitness I've only been slightly above this pace, and that's for one mile. Vast majority of the top performers I've seen in the military are in the 6-7 minute range for 2 miles or more and get really close to 6 for one mile.
5 min per mile - this is really a pipe dream. Have seen only one person close to this pace for more than one mile, and that was this cyborg guy from Estonia. He did 2 miles in the low 10's. Knew a guy that was top of his class in Ranger School - he didn't get close to this pace; saw triathletes, swimmers, and dudes from the academy that did nothing but train for BUD/S and they never got close to this pace either. They could run 10 or more miles close to a 7 minute pace but 6 was pretty close to fastest individual mile time.

5 flat? No. I ran CC in high school and I don’t even know if I could do it. Gotta average 12mph for 5 minutes straight... some people will just never be that fast.
If you meant sub 6 then that’s a lot more doable but still not everyone can do it. Especially if you are counting girls too.

I think a decent percentage of males with slow-twitch muscles could break five in the mile.
There were quite a few sub 5 milers on my team who were not even very good athletes or runners.
Breaking five minutes is not impressive in high school if you are running at a competitive level.

If someone had your family at gun point in the middle of the field inside a track and said "You have to run around this track (400m) in under 70 seconds or they die"...Could you do it? This is without training a lick.
That’s an interesting question.
I wonder if the adrenaline/fear might end up working against you in this scenario. Someone who might otherwise be capable might start out in a full sprint, continue sprinting through the straightaway, go into the last turn completely gassed and just completely fall apart approaching the finish line.
Even if someone knew how to run it, that’s, what, 14-15mph for a minute 10 seconds. I’m not sure if even adrenaline can get most people there just staring cold with no conditioning.

If you can run a sub 5 mile youre a good runner. End of story.

I ran a 5:20 in high school if I were to train I think I could.
