Whether, JK would've done better than BA is unknowable!
I do believe that there needs to be improvement from top to bottom in the US if we are to compete for a World Cup trophy. We need better player development, training, and inclusion of talent from all walks of life and communities. We need better coaching from the youth ranks all the way up to the head coach of the USMNT! There needs to be more accountability for national team results from US Soccer. Also, there needs to be a time table for a path to promotion and relegation in MLS and the "minor" leagues of professional soccer.

Lol at people shitting on the 2002 team and WC. That tournament was HUGE as far as getting things moving in this country. Imagine a flop in 02 to go along with 98 and 06...Donovan’s goal in 2010 would’ve been no more than a 5 second “top play” blurb.
Oh yea, remember when we needed a last minute goal to beat Algeria!!!??

we should've never been in the position we were in. but that team should've been able to win the last match with me as the manager.

“coach”
“coach”

I really don't care who the coach was for Trinidad, the only guy on a team of too many veterans that played with passion and urgency that second half was a teenager.
The gutless performance by our players is the disgrace. Forever etched in my memory is Bradley looking bored in distribution in the late minutes as if he were up 3.

Nah. It's not that important.

I disagree. Relegation is not near the top of our concerns, but needs to be addressed eventually. If we want to compete with the best in the world, we should emulate the best leagues in the world (for the sake of competition and player development). Doing it our own way has delayed the process, IMO. We have not made enough progress! It feels like one step forward and two steps back too often.

They aren't the best in the world because of pro/rel.

if they would have kept Jurgen and not done such a drastic change, I think we would have qualified. I know we would have qualified. Instead we’ve gone backward.

Pretty much this. They should be able to beat T&T without a coach 5-0.

The World Cup that literally everyone knows was rigged?
you mean for Korea? I don't think a single match fixer gave our games a second look.... except the one we played against Korea.

I’m convinced this will not happen in my lifetime.
As long as soccer is a rich kid suburbanite game, with the corresponding parental meddling and “influencing” we will be forever mediocre.

Geoff just airing it all out and I dig it.

It’s this simple: That Trinidad & Tobago team was full of athletes, and we were playing away on an atrocious pitch, and we only needed one point to qualify for the World Cup. So what formation did we use? 4-1-3-2. One defensive midfielder. One defensive midfielder, on a terrible pitch, against a team that wants to capitalize on bad bounces and mistakes. When we only needed one point.

I don’t bring this up to be a jerk. I don’t bring this up to rub salt in any wounds. I bring this up because Bruce Arena, the coach who was responsible for this formation, came out after the game and said, “We played down a man because we couldn’t dribble out of the back.”

That's a fantastic article. Can we please print 2000 copies of it and pass it around the convention this weekend? He's always been one of my favorites and he just cemented that today.
