New Louisiana law aims to get taxes owed by online shoppers

From the Advocate:
Just think if our state government would implement these high tech tactics to cross check medicaid/snap/welfare recipients against abiltiy to work or contract work granted by the state against material/labor cost vs 'ol buddy' padding of contracts, etc, etc.

Under the new law, retailers also must send annual reports to the revenue department, which can cross-check the information with tax returns.

Don’t most states already have this tax in place? I think the reasoning behind the tax makes sense. Retroactively enforcing it and LAs general ineptitude is a different discussion.

Alabama has an online retailer tax revenue system that actually works and not laughed at. It’s called Simplified Use Tax Remittance Program. It’s voluntary and Amazon opted into it in 2016. Now that Whole Foods is Amazon brick and mortar, their are several people wanting to make Amazon play by same rules as other online retailers with physical presence in AL. Since Amazon was proactive and volunteered to opt in to the act in 2016, I think they’ve got enough good will built up to be allowed to stay with current sales tax structure.
It sucks for me that I have to pay sales tax on anything that is fulfilled by Amazon, but I also understand why it was done. We have definitely bought more locally now that Prime isn’t then great deal it was before the tax.
The one way around it is if the item is being sold by a 3rd party seller via Amazon, still tax free.

The program allows online retailers to opt in to a fixed transaction tax rate, rather than paying state and local sales taxes that Alabama consumers would normally pay. Participating merchants would also be allowed to deduct a 2 percent discount of the simplified sellers use tax collected.

I got a statement from Newegg today via email. It explicitly said that the notice is "only provided to you"
And I have to send it to the state.
I'm really excited to send it to them, hope it doesn't happen to get lost in the mail

What if I go to the Texas Welcome Center on I-10 just across the border, get on line and buy stuff? No LA tax, right?

Why do you have to send it to the state? The state gets that same info from the retailer and you.

If you pay Texas sales tax, then no you don't have to pay La tax. If you bought it tax free and it's taxable in La then you would owe La tax.

Um.... you have bigger issues here than the LDR coming after their fair share of your online purchases.
