Iceland is the first country to make it illegal to pay men more than women.
Equal pay policies is now mandatory for companies with 25 or more employees. Those that cannot show that they provide equal pay will be subject to fines.
The law, which was passed last year, went into effect on Jan. 1.
Iceland is already a leader in gender parity. The World Economic Forum (WEF) ranked Iceland as the top country for gender quality for the last nine years based on criteria involving economics, education, health, and politics.
For example, Icelandic women make up 48% of the country’s parliament—without a quota system. And starting over a decade ago, Iceland made great strides to close the wage gap.
Despite this, wage inequality has persisted. In 2016, thousands of women in Iceland left work at 2:38 p.m., to protest pay disparity. The time was symbolic of when woman stop receiving pay during their 9 to 5 work day compared to men. The wage gap in Iceland was 72 cents to every man’s dollar, according to the Atlantic. On International Women’s Day in 2017, the country moved to change that.
The tiny country, pop. 323,000, aims to completely eliminate the wage gap by 2020, according to Al Jazeera.

On Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) praised Iceland for it pay equity legislation.
“We must follow the example of our brothers and sisters in Iceland and demand equal pay for equal work now, regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexuality or nationality,” he wrote on Facebook.

The wage gap has been repeatedly proven to be a lie. Anyone that thinks it still exists does not understand simple mathematics.
The article does not go into detail, though. Is this only for people in the same position? Does seniority & experience mean nothing now? There are multiple reasons for people even in similar positions to get different pay. This law seems to take away the ability of a company to reward its best employees with higher pay. Just show up & do the minimal amount of work to not get fired & you can make as much as the guy who does better work & is a greater asset to the company. No reason to work hard anymore.

That sounds like a fricking nightmare for companies trying to comply with that. And I don't know how the government is going to enforce it.

Men are injured and die in the workplace 10x more than women. Close that gap and then come talk to me.

Since women often take pay cuts in order to have more flexible hours or other special accommodations, this is going to hurt the women more than men.
I have to pay the single mom who has to leave at 2 every day to get her kids the same amount as the guy who stays until 8? Then I just won't be paying any single moms.
Equality and such. Yay.

Surely they will force women to take on just as many manual labor jobs as men as well, right? It's all about being fair and equal after all

So women have no need to apply themselves or work harder. If you're a woman no need to stay late we will pay you the same as men.

Yay, forcing a private business to pay their employees what the government thinks is fair, all in the name of equality.
Of course Bernie loves it

Progressives want equal outcomes without equal effort.
You gotta love "progress".

I can see this leading to the creation of multiple subsets of job positions within a company in order to incentivize employees to work hard. Technician 1 goes to Technician 1a, 1b, 1c, etc.

Fine with me if we can also institute Iceland's immigration policies. It's what Bernie I would want also, I assume.

I don't get how this is possible to enforce. So companies are going to have to pay every person with the same job title the same wage, regardless of performance? Good luck with that.

How come strip clubs don't get sued for refusing to hire men?

Bigots are late. America has had this law since the 70’s

good ole cuckland.

And this is why Iceland is the economic super power that it is today.

There you have it, all NBA and WNBA players must be paid equally.

This is just a blatant lie. Every developed country on earth has laws against pay discrimination on the basis of sex.
