Proposed Graphite Plant for Port Manchac

I figured I would have seen a thread here on this by now but maybe i missed it. This is a serious concern of mine. This one plant could destroy the entire Maurepas swamp region. It’s time for us to take a stand. The water released will have salt concentration 3x that of ocean water.

At the plant, flake graphite would be milled into a spherical shape and purified with water and acids. The final product would be shipped to battery manufacturers in the U.S. and abroad, Jahn said. At full capacity, the plant would produce about 10,000 metric tons of spherical graphite each year, he said.

Syrah has applied to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality for air and water permits. The company proposes to release annually about 38 tons of particulate matter, .93 tons of hydrochloric acid, .52 tons of hydrogen fluoride and .004 tons of formaldehyde into the air, according to permit documents. The plant also proposes to pump 41,000 gallons of water used in the manufacturing process into North Pass on a daily basis.

I'm conflicted. One one hand you have an opportunity for a lot of good jobs on the other there MAY be some environmental concerns. Lets wait and see what those actual concerns are before protesting a man putting food on his family's table.

25 proposed jobs. Don’t be conflicted any longer
Also I already listed the environmental concerns and they are listed again in the link in more detail.
Pumping salt water into fresh water should be enough

Have to admit I didn't read the article. Sounded like a project that would create a bunch of jobs. 25 is not much reward if there is any environmental risk.
Better hope the company isn't connected well politically.

The article I read the other day said 100 jobs...
Not that I'm in favor of the plant, just noting what I read.

Could be 25 positions with 4 shifts. Idk.
Still it would have to bring thousands of jobs to change my opinion.

im less worried about the salt then the toxic acids and chemicals that will be released into the water. battery plants are nothing but toxic waste dumps for the areas around them
i think this will be very very bad for the lake

You can be sure of one thing, the company does not give a fk about us..

Why hasn’t our Parish President voiced his concern for this?
Gov Edwards could stop this with one phone call but that’d probably be taking money out of his pocket.

Those 25 to 100 jobs is permanent positions. I can tell you with certainty that it would create 9months to 1 year of work opportunities for 350-500 people.
Eta: I’m not saying I’m for it or against it, just that I’m our state which has its economy heavily based on oil and gas, to have an industrial plant wanting to be built is nice for all those industrial contractors that are needing some work. I’m not getting into the politics of pocket lining vs pollution.

Where are you reading this?

I am not saying I agree with this thing being located in Louisiana at all but you should change the title of your post. It isn’t going to be a battery plant. It is going to make a component that goes into batteries for electric cars. Big, big difference. Also isn’t it ironic this type of fscility only exists because people think electric cars are better for the environment?

I'm not really sure about the potential environmental impact of this facility. But it's infinitely hilarious that it could be underway so quickly. Meanwhile, I remember going to a meeting about freshwater diversions for Maurepas swamp back around '02. We were told the diversions could be in operation as soon as 2012. They haven't even finished researching models yet, much less started any actual construction. Why do beneficial projects take years of research and this one could be hurried along into action?

Government project vs private company.
Government projects take years so politicians can take credit over long timeframes and payoffs with all the studies with tax dollars
Private companies ain’t got time or money for all that crap. Payoff quick, politicians get credit for jobs before next election.

There is or will be public comment period prior to giving the company the operating permit. If you feel strongly about it you should provide your comments to LDEQ during that period. I’m going to to try and find their permit number and come back and post the link for everyone.
