The Shape Of Water

Good movie.
Clearly Guillermo Del Toro’s homage to The Creature From The Black Lagoon. He does love his monsters and freakiness.
The mousy mute woman has the sects with the fish man. I know that was smelly like swamp water. What a freak she turned out to be. It’s always the quiet ones.
Michael Shannon was great in his role.

This is all I need to know to sell me on this movie

Been looking forward to seeing this one. I was hoping it would be out down here this weekend, but it looks like the nationwide release isn't for another couple of weeks.

I'm not shocked by this at all...dude is incredibly underrated. He crushed the role in Take Shelter, dude can act.

Going to see it tomorrow. Figured the crowd would be more lively with the Disaster Artist premiere tonightt, and I love Room screenings. Should be a ton of fun.
But I am looking forward to seeing The Shape of Water the most. It is my most anticipated movie of the year, and I really hope it can measure up to Pan's Labyrinth.

I think that may be my favorite movie, so yeah, not counting on it but it's gotten stellar reviews.

I want to be excited for this movie but the trailer just does nothing for me

I thought it was OK, but just OK. It was like this generation's version of Splash. down to the ending.

I enjoyed it for the larger part. I'll have to think about whether there was a hidden reference or value added with the pie guy turns out to be a homophobe and racist scene. That part took me out of the movie for at least 15 minutes while I tried to digest what the purpose might be for the movie that had been progressing in a fairly linear fashion.

quote:I kind of took that scene as a "don't judge a book by it's cover" thing. The older guy found the pie guy very attractive on the outside. But it turned out he was a piece of shite and a racist. On top of that, he made shite pies. He had absolutely no value as a person. Kind of the opposite from the fish guy, who was an animal on the outside, but pure in heart. At least that's how I took it.

He didn't make the pies - they were shipped in. He was just part of the franchising.
What value, exactly, did the homoesexual neighbor have? He couldn't sell his artwork, and was trying to hook up with a guy half his age. Sitting around in an apartment with a bunch of cats. I would've reacted the same way towards him in the restaurant if we were having a conversation and then he tried to grab my hand. Creepy old man.

I considered and liked that but it then seemed to get muddled by the restoration of some physical beauty (hair) by the don't judge a book by its cover character. And Michael Shannon was obviously made to be fairly grotesque. If they had stuck with your explanation throughout I would have liked it better.

SPOILERS
As far as what value the old man had? He was a nice person who cared about people. Was he a perfect person who succeeded financially in life? No. But what you perceive as "value" and what the director perceives as "value" are very different from each other.

Amazing how people love to spoil this movie for others.

it didn't do it for me. I just couldn't get into it really. I'm also surprised that no one, especially on this board, has discussed the heavy handed subtext in the movie.
Posted on 1/14/18 at 1:25 pm to REG861
RE: subtext I think I would have struggled with that as the writer as much as I did as the viewer. If the love story is the base of the story the first layer over the top is communicating through obstacles (central character being mute is her literal obstacle and being unheard by most her metaphorical).
But when you start wandering away from that story to flesh out the plot you find yourself wandering into less universal themes.

Where do you live if The Disaster Artist is just premiering where you're at?

It is so fricking terrific and as good as it is, it still isn't as good as Pan's Labyrinth to me. That's how good Pan's Labyrinth is, even though they don't speak a lick of English.

at 1st I completely disagree.....then it does make since....there was a very similar central theme...Del Toro's darker spin and Michael Shannon's character development was worth the price and the cat scene with the creature was gold also.
