Why can't a college student assess the conditions himself and decide it is too dangerous to ascend 50 feet in the air inside of a fricking cherry picker? At what age do things stop being blamed on everyone else ?

Exactly Captain.
How did Brian Kelly "kill a kid" who made an assessment of the conditions and decided it was safe to proceed. In other words, how is Kelly responsible for the young MAN who made an independent decision that it was safe to do so?
This is the same as saying the #metoo women raped and sexually abused themselves....
While, yes the kid could've said "no I'm not going up there" he likely also assessed that the head coach would have fired him on the spot for disobeying him. Ultimately Kelly was the authoritative figure and decided to send the kid up there.

You've clearly never been around college athletics.

False statement on your part.
Also where does it say that Kelly told the kid to get up there? It seems like the kid just went up there because that was his normal duty and no one told him to get down. I'm sure he could've been like "hey coach. Pretty windy today. Idk if it's safe to get up in the lift with these gusts" and Kelly probably would've been like "oh damn. Good call kid. Yeah stay down here today and shoot a different angle".
It's not like head football coaches are watching OSHA safety videos on a quarterly basis. He probably just didn't even think about it because no one pointed out the potential safety hazard.
