I am interested in purchasing a gun and keeping it at home. It will be mostly utilized for family protection and occasional shooting a gun range for fun and practice.
Why not a shotgun for home defense?

If strictly home defense, I'd suggest a shotgun. If you really want a handgun, you need to go and put your hands on as many as possible. The feel of the gun in your hand will let you know which one is right for you.
I have a Sig P220 and H&K VP9. Love them both.

Actually not a bad rec for him. He's moving to Minnesota where the garden variety burglar isn't 6'4" 220 and doesn't have the bulletproof hide we are starting to see down here.

you might want to consider buying 2. One for each of you that way you don't have to compromise on what is somewhat comfortable.
I thought you were going to say to protect yourself when she gets mad at you and now has a gun. But he should definitely say it's for comfort.

Walmart
200 bulk range ammo is ~38.00
Don't shoot your home defense rounds at the range. They are kind of costly

Is this a weapon that you want her to be comfortable with as well? That makes a big difference.
In my experience, females can have a tough time working the slide on semi-automatic pistols. My wife heavily prefers a revolver.
That makes the Judge (or the S&W Governor) a good choice.

A revolver would be a good choice if you aren't very experienced with handguns.

i don't like the recommendation of a 5 or 6 shot gun for a home defense weapon at all. i mean i don't dislike the gun but give me something with a higher bullet capacity every day of the week for my in home weapon.

Can't go wrong with the Glock 19 as everyone is suggesting. Its a full sized 9mm and Glocks are extremely easy to take apart and put back together for cleaning.

Yea. Stay away from guns.

The chance of ever confronting a home intruder with your gun are minuscule, the chance of needing more than 5 shots in those rare situations are approaching nil very quickly.

Never handled the Springfield, so I can't really speak on those except that I've heard they're nice guns. Only 2 handguns I've ever owned were both Glocks

you can't allow yourself to think like that when selecting a weapon best for home defense.
What you rather take a 30-50 ft shot with across the living room, a revolver or a full size pistol? What if there are two intruders, you are automatically put in a pretty big disadvantageous spot there with 5 or 6 shot.
I got 20 rounds in my xdm at home ready to go whizzing.

Go to the Outdoor Board. Seriously. You will get real responses there.
