LSU crossed midfield three times

For all of the talk about how much different this game looked, for how we were “in it” until the end, and how well we moved the ball, that is the simple fact that nothing can sugarcoat.
Alabama went up by two touchdowns in the first quarter and we never seriously challenged them after that, never getting within 11.
We crossed midfield on our two scoring drives and once in the first quarter when it was 7-0 and we punted at the 39. That’s it.
But if we completed those passes!!!!
I’m not knocking the effort by the players or coaches in this game. They showed up on the road against a better team prepared, played hard, and didn’t quit.
But that is no different whatsoever than any of the previous games in this series. It is the unnecessary revisionist history to make this game some kind of turning point in the series that many of us are amused by.
Be optimistic about the performance all you want, but don’t knock previous performances to justify that optimism because then you invite those with facts and perspective to challenge you on your bullshite.
We saw nothing Saturday night that we haven’t seen in every game in this series for a decade.
Now, 9-3. Get there. No excuses.

I got blasted in the game thread for saying we were playing scared when we ran the clock out at the end of the first half with two timeouts while down 11 points.
The standards for this program have fallen off a cliff apparently.

Calm down bro
If we win out and go 10-3, I'm pretty sure our fans will "expect" a good season next year. And we get bama at home.

I'm calm as a cucumber. I'm also amazed that this place is now into expecting to get beat down by Bama so bad that never being in the game and giving up before the first half was over is now a good thing.

Funny gif.
So no response then?

How many times did Alabama cross midfield? 1 touchdown drive started on our side b/c of the interception. That leaves 3 that I can think of that resulted in 2 more TDs and a field goal. I don’t think they crossed it again.
And yes, IF our QB hit the open receivers more often like he should have it would’ve happened more.
LSU outplayed Bama at every position Saturday night with the exception of QB and punter. We were literally a good QB away from beating Bama for the first time since 2011.

I don’t disagree that they should have been trying to get points there. Bama was selling out run with 9 innthe box and a single high safety who was creeping down pretty hard (and he wasn’t Fitzpatrick)
I was hoping we would PA pass and let chark get deep on a 50/50 ball. Couldn’t have hurt to at least give it a shot when they were going man up on a one man route.
Maybe there is merit to O wanting to simply keep it close and not take chances. It’s a better appearance. The moral victory thing is a farce. No one is happy losing. But there were a lot of positives to take Home in that game. Even the players knew that. You could tell inntjeir post game. We lost a game everyone expected us to lose. Did we have them on he ropes? No. Were there plays there to be made that a better qb could make? ABSOLUTELY. That’s the take away.
That said, of LSU had a passer that could burn a blitz we would shred them. Mettenberger was ripping their blitzes apart back in 12. Could have thrown for 350 that night but les miles gonna les miles

On 1-9, we never cross midfield.
Two years ago and last year, how many three-and-outs did we have? How many did we have this year?
The two thing that I'm most discouraged about are:
- the number of Louisiana natives that had a big impact for Alabama and against LSU.
- the talk that guys like Clapp and Wheathersby are gone after this season.
Aside from watching guys like Hootie Jones and Dylan Moses put the hurt on LSU, Bama also doesn't have late round potential players leave a year early[ You think that if Tony Brown would have gone to LSU, he still would have been around for his Senior year?].
Until those two phenomena change, talk like this will remain as what stings.

The pussy coaching, no real urgency, playing not to lose and not playing to win absolutely pissed me off. I can’t forgive coaching for bringing such a timid fricking game plan. How may Jet sweeps did we run in the 1st half? It was a broken play after the first 20 times we ran it. To beat Bama you have to do something different, we weren’t expected to win, so why not fricking go all out to get the win? Some trick plays, onside kick, reverses, WHERE DID THE frickING SCREEN PASS GO? If you end up losing pulling out all the stops then so fricking be it, at least you can say you threw everything at them. Also from the beginning of the season we should have given McMillan some wildcat QB packages, he may not be a real accurate passer but he is a threat to pass, and we could have used some of that Saturday night. We need a REAL HEAD COACH!!

At the time, that was the correct strategy. Run the clock out, regroup at halftime, and start fresh with the ball after the half.
In that situation, all of the risk lay on LSU. Had Etling been picked off again, Bama gets at least another 3. If he'd thrown a couple of incomplete passes, now Bama gets the ball at midfield with 1:30 or so left with little to no risk for being aggressive. Worst case for them would've been that LSU intercepts and has the ball again on their own side of the field with very little time left.
It was a conservative strategy, yes, but not necessarily a bad one.

You want to mention the the punter that averaged 51 yds and had 6 of his 8 land inside the 20?
I’ve been the biggest O critic but after watching that game it’s hard for me not to feel different about the direction of our program. We went in as a 3 TD dog and everyone thought we were going to get ran out of the building. We ran the ball well, played great defense, outgained them, had a higher 3rd down % and dominated the TOP.
Hell just the Darrell Williams TD should give you hope when Ed Ingram drives his guy 5 yds deep into the end zone.
If Danny make 2 of those 3 big open throws then we win that game. If Kirklin doesn’t get the bad block in the back then we might win that game, of Battle goes a little wide on the blitz we might win that game.
For the past few years Bama has dominated us at the point of attack. LSU won the trenches and we’re legitamely a couple of plays away from that win.
We’re coming....

You have to risk shite to win against Bama. We supposedly had nothing to lose, so why not play like it?

It was fricking pathetic and equivalent to throwing up a white flag.

Backed up on your own 5-yard line when Nick Saban KNOWS you have to throw is not the time to "risk shite" against Alabama.
Go back to playing NCAA 2017.

Totally agree ...
only if the dropped passes are caught we could have won the game.

Different fans watch games with different levels of detail.
We have simple-minded, bottom line types that aren't able to see any differences between this game and the last few.
But, those who are capable of understanding the game can see that, unlike the last couple of years, we were able to successfully move Alabama's defensive front and, more impressively, were able to protect the QB for the most part.
That difference gave us chances to make plays downfield via the passing game. We had guys running open at times. Honestly, I think we were closer to winning this game than we were last year in a 10-0 game.
The "moral victory" crowd really isn't satisfied with that. But, they recognize that the ability to do those things seemed impossible 4-6 weeks ago. This team has improved significantly, and the fans can see a path to success (being a legit contender) moving forward.

Like I said, we have several different type of fans. The "bottom line" types are the worst though.
