Jim Harbaugh: How come a 16+ team playoff works for other sports but not Division 1-A CFB?

The first College Football Playoff Top 25 poll was released Tuesday, and Michigan was nowhere to be found.
But that won't stop Jim Harbaugh from talking about the four-team playoff. Chalk him up as one who wants to see it expand to 16, a format already used in the Football Championship Subdivision.
"They've got a great system," Harbaugh said Wednesday morning on "Jamie and Stoney" on 97.1 The Ticket. "It's been in place for many years. My dad (Jack) won the national championship at Western Kentucky, when they were I-AA in 2002.
"I think that is the best system. When you look at every other sport, they have a playoff."
"And it's not a four-team system," Harbaugh said. "Basketball goes from 64, I think, (note: it's 68) to the Final Four. I think that's the way it should be done to crown a national champion.
"Like they do in gymnastics. Like they do in basketball -- men's and women's. Lacrosse. Every other sport you can think of."
If 16 teams is too big a leap, Harbaugh says, then he'd be fine with expanding to 12. He's well-versed in the arguments against it, too, and realizes a playoff format of that magnitude could mean two teams playing as many as 16 games in a season.
His answer for that?
"An 11-game season," Harbaugh said.
"Some of these conferences that are 14 and 16 teams, you win your conference and only one team goes?," Harbaugh said. "One team may not have played the other good teams in the conference. We see that already in the Big Ten. Strength of schedule is a big determination of what your record is going to be.
"It doesn't have to be just one team from each conference. You could have 16 teams. They vote them in in the FCS. I think you could do that in the (FBS) as well."

He is just chawing trying to stay in the news since his teams and coaching is irrelevant.

He wouldn’t be saying this shite if his team was undefeated.
The best part about college football is that every game matters. You wanna win a championship? Don’t lose two fricking games before November.

That would be all fine and dandy, except the FCS system sucks for the most part. I like the playoff, but they try this "regionalization" bullshite, so you don't the best matchups or even the matchups that you should get if teams were just seeded 1-24.
Yeah, that's right, Jimmy boy doesn't even know how to count. There are 24 teams in the FCS playoffs. Top 8 have a bye.

Completely disagree with going that high. 8 is the absolute max with 5 conference champs and 3 at larges.
I think 6 with 5 conference champs and one at large is perfect. Top two get byes. You already have 6 rotating venues, 5 now actually get used every year.
I absolutely hate the committee and the subjective bias of its members. Winning games gets overlooked by "best team bias".

All those other sports do it wrong... Nobody gives a damn who wins the big conferences in basketball, baseball, etc. Its all about a few weekends at the end of the season.

+ 100000000
There’s a reason no one gives two shits about the regular seasons of any of those sports like NBA, NCAA MBB, and FCS football for that matter.

March Madness is the worst way to crown a national champion

Yep. Even when it's not about Michigan, the media find a way to make it about Michigan.

He's so desperate to condone his failures.

This is what I wish they would do. First, so away with the committee, and go solely to computer models. Then take all of the various models (FPI, S&P+, FEI, Sagarin, Massey, etc.), and find the most accurate collection of models based on their parameters (score margin, possession efficiency, win probabilities), find the optimal weightings of each in a training sample then see how it performs on validation sample and then refine until the most accurate explanatory and predictive weighting is identified. In addition to a composite rating, identify the standard error of each’s composite.
Expand to 8 teams, with at least 3 at-large bids using the composite score. In addition; the 5 P5 conference champions are automatic bids IF using those standard errors, their composite rating is not statistically (say 0.05) lower than the team ranked 8th.
So I think conference champions should get some preference, but they have to have a composite that reflects that their not significantly worse than the top 8. This was a 8-5 conference champ from a weak division isn’t given an auto bid if the resume doesn’t warrant it.

But basically has just sold out to make money on this crazy tournament because it's the only time they make money.
Hell Boeheim wants the tournament to include EVERY team.
1975–1978: 32 teams - perfect format for basketball becuase it accounts for all conference champs and a good amount of at-larges...but not this crap where the #9 team in the ACC gets in. Basketball has so many programs...you have to have at least 32.
16 would basically just be Conference Champs.
I love for CFB to be the Top 10 because rarely is the Top 10 disagreed upon. Top 2 teams get a bye...Once you get into the teens - that's just Cinderella story. Sure they could win but you're getting into March Madness territory.

Get paid 9 million to be in top 4
