Shepard was not a wasted talent at LSU. Shep wanted to play pro ball. You are not going to get a pro contract as a quarterback as an undersized duel threat scamper back, even if you win big in college ball. Based on the measurables, Shepard had to develop another talent. He isn't big enough to be an every down running back or tight end. Wide receiver was the one position on the offensive side of the ball for which Shep had the measurables to translate into a pro contract. He had a learning curve, but he worked his arse off and gained valuable experience.

And it worked. He's still in the league earning a solid paycheck. This is a success story.

From his high school clips, RS had great vision and speed to burn (4.46 at LSU's pro day).

He had 104 rushes for 716 yards at LSU (6.88 ypc), with longs of 50, 69 and 78 yards. LSU's offense during this period was incredibly predictable--and experimenting with him in a wildcat offense package during a period of horrible qb play could have worked out well. With no wr experience, RS needed the ball with the ability to see the field in front of him.

He clearly could have more yards and TDs in another college offense. But he'd probably be at the same place in his NFL career, though maybe with a larger rookie paycheck. Props to him for hard work. never being a prima donna and making it.

For Les to have not called for ONE pass from Shep in his 4 years is a fireable offense. The embodiment of how lost LSU was on offense that his skillset didn't matter to the staff enough to try it ONCE. Same story with not giving Jarrett Lee ONE drive in the MNC.

Shep has heart and is a great ambassador. It's no mistake that he has been in the NFL as long as he has, college stat lines mean so little.

edit, and I dont want to hear one stupid word about arm strength, the kid had a decent enought arm to throw for over 3k yards in high school. Danny Weurful had the worst arm ever and still won the Heisman because of creative timing routes from a great offensive mind like spurriers.. Miles had the offensive mind of a tree stump and im glad he is gone.. I never liked him.. I still remember the day my buddy at Ok State said thanks for taking him, they were looking for ways to give it to Gundy.

still to this day the great waste of talent in LSU history, Miles should have been fired for this alone.. I lived 3 doors down from him and have known him for years. Outstanding young man raised by a fantastic family. He loved LSU and still does. but I remember after his freshman year him telling me that he didnt think he would get a shot, he never did.. Wish we would have had Canada when he was here.. that kid could have been special... thats why i cant stand miles..

He wasn't an SEC QB.

If he had stayed at QB he probably wouldn't be in the NFL right now.

Anyone that says Shep didn't get a shot at LSU is a liar. He had plenty of chances, and wasn't a great WR. How to you explain the numerous WRs at LSU that excelled? You make is sound like Miles was holding onto Shep's ankles as he was running routes.

He just wasn't good while he was her
So, him doing being better in the NFL then he did in college isn't because he was misused here?

I can tell you unequivocally that Shepard would have made Jennings look like Tom Brady. I know Russell too. I like him. Incredible athlete, but a college QB he was not.
