...and won't let foreigners buy houses.

The Mexican constitution prohibits foreign ownership of property in certain areas of the country known as restricted zones.

It always amazes me to see people from countries like Canada criticize the US immigration policy when they won't let people in if they have a dwi from 10 years ago

Ardern, who campaigned on social issues including housing affordability and improved healthcare, has described capitalism as a "blatant failure" when it came to putting a roof over the heads of the poor.
Sounds like leftists complaining about gentrification except substitute white yuppies for wealthy foreign real estate investors.
Edit:
quote:
"We have agreed on banning the purchase of existing homes by foreign buyers," she said, specifying that the new rules only applied to non-residents.
Looks like it only applies to nonresident noncitizens (in other words nonimmigrants). The equivalent of green card holders (resident noncitizens) can still purchase homes.

yeah that is always funny. it's like people coming from failed states get rewarded for that state lacking a data infrastructure to actually record offenses, while those trying to enter from developed countries are penalized.
it's also funny when US citizens bitch about our immigration policies and compliment Canada then lose their minds when we try to adopt Canadian-style immigration policies

If not mistaken there is a campaign to blacken New Zealand. Could have something to do with that.

naw NZ has pretty harsh immigration rules already, but it's facing a housing issue
they also have a coalition government so this is kind of the baby of that coalition
they appease those who want strict immigration standards and the progressives who want to lower housing costs. now this policy is potentially insane (b/c they're leaving millions of foreign investment outside of their borders) but it's a sellable domestic policy for Kiwis

Start snatching up lots/abandoned houses that can be razed in Old South Baton Rouge.

Well, it looks like they left themselves an out.

Overseas buyers will no longer be allowed to purchase existing homes in New Zealand, Prime Minister-elect Jacinda Ardern said Tuesday, as she unveiled a raft of policy deals made with her coalition partners.

well NZ is an island with super high regulations due to earthquakes. i don't think building new property is that easy

Perhaps, but the standard of living is far lower. Met a US expat living in NZ at the airport a month ago. He said he, his wife, and three kids live in an 1100 sqft house and that's pretty much standard. Can't imagine a small residential building would cost all that much to build.

As someone who has family there, I can give you a little more insight.
The government there has always been very "progressive" overall. Even the " Conservatives" there would be a lot like the Democrats here. From what I can understand , for the past 2-3 years, a lot of wealthy foreigners from the U.S. Australia and China...big time, have been buying up a lot of property in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin(Southern part of the South Island and because of the taxing matrix in NZ, it has really priced up the taxes on native born Kiwis who live there full time.
Kiwi's overall are a parochial people, the country has about 4.5 million people in it and they are concentrated in three main cities like Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
Here's the problem though, as great a place as New Zealand is, it needs the foreign investment in order to keep being the kind of country that it is. It's one of the most geographically isolated places on earth.

Yeah it's a paradox
Their economy requires foreign investment and trade but that is causing higher SOL and inflation that is affecting their domestic population. The UK has a similar issue.
