Jet Sweep Option

When the jet motion is moving towards the weak side of the formation, it seems like an option play a lot of the time. It looks like if Danny sees the backside linebacker move with the jet motion, he will give it to Guice on a power to the strong side and if the linebackers don't shift, he calls for the snap a tad earlier and hands to the jet.
So if the jet is coming across towards the left side of the formation, the blocking is typically made for a power to the right and the flanker on the weak side is blocking for the motion man in case he gets the ball.
It's been a great play for the Tigers the past two weeks and is one that you can run many times throughout a game similar to a zone read or an RPO.
Anyone else noticed this?

Canada most likely has 5 (or more) options out of that motion formation. It just depends on what Danny reads.

You're probably not far off from the truth. When MC came in and said it's an easy offense to learn, he really meant it. If you have plays like that where everyone does the same thing but the quarterback has a simple read to dictate where the ball goes, it becomes extremely effective. Glad we are seeing it come to life in the meat of our schedule.

Add to that if they're picking up some tendencies they'll read just the eyes.
In your example of the LB, if he is 'peeking in' on that jet sweep he'll be a hearbeat off on reading his real key(s).
That heartbeat of hesitation might not be enough to keep him out of the play, but might be enough to allow the OL to get to him with the proper angle/depth.

I noticed a lot of the times they faked it, but went up the middle, the jet sweep option was wide open

I'd love to see LSU run a play similar to what the Saints ran on Sunday on 4th down. Give to the WR on the sweep, but have the running back (Guice) trailing and make a pitch to him once the defense commits.

quote:Lol, I thought about same thing. Have doubts about it working exactly that way but I can't help but think of Dillon and Guice running some sort of option out of a regular jet sweep formation.

quote:Many times that's a pre-snap judgement on what the def end will be doing... upfield or stay at home. If DE is pushing upfield, many times they'll try it regardless of LBs or S because it's good for a couple yards (as long as runner cuts inside and doesn't run away from LoS, which they FINALLY taught Gage to do). It's a RPO, but guessing instead of reading the end (based on tendencies).

The jet sweep is being run from a sort of a wing-t playbook. So some of what you notice is correct.

Yep wait till Canada can add the element of the qb keeping it as well. If we go with a qb like LN next season

I'm sure this is the direction we want to go in eventually. I think even if Myles gets the starting job next year, there will be packages for either McMillan or Narcisse

And this is where Canada is taking his reads from as well. What did the DE do last time we did this? What did the OLB do? If you notice him running the same formation/play more than once he's probably patterning the defensive cues for later in the game.

Damn it.
Stop telling the defense our plays.

I guarantee Saban has drills everyday on shutting that down 10 different ways.
