The cliffs of the wiki answer is that it is physics that deals with astronomy.
The cliffs of the college course answer is that it is a filled full of crazy fricking math, combined with surprisingly little astronomy to describe really really big forces/energies. Like stupid fricking big.
In my first Astrophysics course the professor basically said that for many equations you can "round" the coefficient of constants like the speed of light down to "1" because anything before the exponent won't really matter.

We currently use a measuring stick to see how deep (old) the universe is. But we know the stick we use is limited (mathematics) and will need a new kind of stick to measure more accurately.
