If you do that, kids will just go elsewhere. If you get a degree in Engineering, you're not passing up a job with one of the oil companies in Texas. LSU has minimal merit scholarships because of TOPS. If you take away TOPS, you better have significant increases in merit scholarships or you're losing a huge chunk of your quality students to out of state universities. My kid just got an email from Rice saying if your family makes under $80K, you're going for free. If you make $80K plus and demonstrate need, your student loans are guaranteed to be under $10K for the whole 4 years.

So penalize the student for lack of opportunity within the state.

The state is the problem, not TOPS.

I wanted to stay in state after graduation but had a great offer in DFW and got shite for offers in LA. I understand the point he is making but it’s not like all these grads WANT to leave the state.

I mean you kinda have to have enough good paying jobs to keep those graduates in state. Not all of them are going to go on and open their own business.

There are a limited number of positions at good companies in the State. That combined with the level of nepotism in the state... and its a no brainer for graduates to seek opportunities outside the state.

OR we could do something really crazy like stop funneling money into the university system and falsely jacking up the cost of education so more normal people could afford college without the government subsidy

If a recruit has an LSU scholarship offer and he goes out of state. The recruits momma must pay back all monies that she received from state programs for her family.

I started applying for jobs my last year at lsu. I spent 9 months applying to over 100 jobs and only got 5 interviews with no offers. I applied to Texas opportunities and was hired 30 days later.

I have kids who would greatly benefit from TOPS and I think it needs major overhaul. I do not think taxpayers should pay for my kids college education.

The biggest change is it needs to be a loan forgiven upon graduation.

Also there needs to be some benefit/priority given to students who stay in state or penalty to students who leave. Such as half loan is due if you leave state.

Third it truly needs to be a merit system. Not everyone needs to go to college.

Last, we need to reduce the number of colleges in LA and send some people to trade school.

How about you give companies some good reasons to come to Louisiana? Quit your bitching and do something about it!
