Tell me about voting in Louisiana...

Life long Mississippian, just moved to Louisiana. I know the primaries work differently over here. What is the difference between registering with a Party vs. being Independent.

We don’t have party primaries outside of presidential elections, so party registration is largely irrelevent.
We have open primaries. First round, all the candidates run in. If no one gets a majority of the vote, the top two vote-getters go to a runoff. Sometimes two reps go to the runoff, sometimes two dems, sometimes one of each.
It is a vastly superior system because it forces candidates to play to the middle from day one in order to win rather than facing two fringe retards against one-another.

The jungle primary represented the greatest political system reform for the civil rights movement when it was adopted by Louisiana in 1975.

Republicans vote on Tuesday, Democrats on Wednesday.

Yeah, but remember the year we got Eddie Edwards vs David Duke? A known criminal vs a known klansman. And after Fast Eddie won, he pulled more shenanigans in the governor's mansion and got prosecuted for those.

If Roemer doesn't have a midlife crisis and switch parties, you would have had Roemer and Edwards in the runoff that year. It was a crazy year where the sitting governor was an absentee in the governor's race until about 2 months before polling.

I was going to say something about Buddy Roemer, but I was pretty young back then and couldn't remember if he'd ran or not. It may not have to do with my age at the time and more to do with the fact that he was, as you said, absentee for most of the process.

Actually, in Louisiana, elections are on saturdays whenever possible

Republicans and Independents get to vote once. Democrats get to vote multiple times and get a free ride and lunch thrown in for dey mama an dem.

That was an aberration. Roemer is to that election what Texas A&M was to their game against UCLA. He committed every possible sin a republican could indulge in:
He appointed a radical environmentalist (whom he was sleeping with) to head DEQ
He hacked off the teachers and all public employee union members with reform attempts
He thumbed his knows at industry (you know, the money who elected him) with tax increases
Basically, Roemer abandoned his base while spitting on his opponents, leaving him hated by everyone. Duke was just the only one left to take those votes after Buddy self-destructed.

Blacks will vote overwhelmingly democrat no matter how much of a crook the candidate may be.
White rednecks will vote 100 percent republican no matter how stupid the candidate's cliches and populist message is (drape yourself with a flag, Bible and utter family values and no welfare a few times and you're in.)
Educated people will throw their hands up in the air at the lack of viable candidates and will choose the lesser of several evils.
