People want to act like any ethnic or regional group who ever thought about independence should get it, as if things would stay the same or be better than before and there'd be no big brother to tell them what to do.
They're wrong.
It gets glossed over a lot in the history books, but after our glorious American Revolution we STRUGGLED as a nation for a good while. We had little industry, resources, or even labor to rectify the first two.
There's a reason why people grouped together to form larger nations. Pooling resources makes the sum greater than the parts and capable of achieving so much more. This is why every group can't be independent.

But it turned out well for us in the end.

Part of the reason the Catalonia's want to succeed is that they are the wealthiest region of Spain (as I understand it) and are therefore taxed the most but the money is used to help fund under developed parts of Spain and they feel that the Spanish government is essentially stealing their money and paying for the welfare systems of the poor people.
That, and they have cultural differences with the rest of Spain. But mostly the money thing.
