Huge story, more so because the Spanish central government was a bit heavy-handed in their attempt to stop the vote from happening.

He said the door was open to a unilateral declaration of independence after Catalan officials said voters had backed secession with a 42.3% turnout.
Spain's government has warned it could suspend Catalan autonomy.
The constitutional court banned the vote and almost 900 people were hurt as police tried to stop it going ahead.
Officers from the national police and paramilitary Civil Guard seized ballot papers and boxes at polling stations.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Catalans had been fooled into taking part in an illegal vote.
More than 2.2 million people were reported to have voted, according to Catalan authorities, out of 5.3 million registered voters. Just under 90% of those who voted backed independence, they said.
A Catalan spokesman said more than 750,000 votes could not be counted because polling stations were closed and urns were confiscated.

You could replace Spain with almost any Middle Eastern country or African country and it would be par for the course. But Spain beating down voters to stop a vote? That's very surprising

I highly doubt they're going to get any worthwhile recognition from any major world power.
I already know they United States will either have no opinion or say they don't recognize it.

Well, it is a meaningless, illegal vote. They can't simply declare themselves independent and expect Spain to give up a huge swath of its territory....which has belonged to Spain forever.
"Hey Spain, thanks a lot for pouring billions into Barcelona. We'll take it from here. Maybe we'll let you use your, oh wait, OUR port at a discount!"
It's like California declaring independence.

The vote was illegal under the spanish constitution.
Its not like the UK where Scotland could secede.

The american revolution was illegal too and we still did it anyway.

I’m very interested to see the opinions of a lot of y’all. Given America’s own history of having several states declare independence.

Yep, we did. So good luck with that Catalan revolution against Spain, the EU, and NATO. And if you did take it, holding it.

I thought about making this comparison, but it is tough. We were overseas colonies of Great Britain, different from say...Scotland or Wales, which is closer to what Catalonia is to Spain.

Support.
The war of northern aggression should've never taken place and Abe Lincoln, wherever he is now, will forever have the lives of half a million human beings on his conscience just to keep a ragtag band of states together.

Too bad it won't happen. They deserve independence.

Spain should hope that the Catalonians don't take a page from the Basque playbook.
The ETA caused tons of trouble for the Madrid government and the last thing a tourism-heavy country like Spain needs is some pissed of separatist lighting off a bomb in the subway.

Based upon what exactly?

My understanding is that Catalonia is like several regions in Europe that were stuck with Countries after WW2 that they didn't belong with or want to be a part of.
I believe Catalonia identifies more with France than Spain.
Corsica,I believe, has similar feelings about being a part of France.

Right, the difference is that they've been part of Spain for 500+ years.
