Fair enough. I just went with the book store heading. I really liked Red Rising, so maybe your refs are the way to go.
I do feel like a dumbass now in that I claimed to be a newb ( I still think I am), but I did read ASOIAF after the show came out. I really liked that too.

The First Law Trilogy was pretty good
Another is The Lies of Locke Lamora (book 1 of the Gentleman Bastards series). Haven't read the others yet.

Ender's Game, though the first book and the following books are completely different.
