Update:
Optimum released a video this morning highlighting ESPN's business woes
quote:
Altice responds to ESPN:
Altice USA issued the following statement:
“We are always working hard to negotiate carriage agreements that reflect the best interest of all our customers. We want to carry ESPN and its sister networks, including ABC and Disney, at a reasonable rate and have already offered an increase in retransmission fees and sports programming costs.
Yet, despite the fact that viewership of their programming by Optimum customers has been declining in the double digits for years, ESPN and its owner are demanding double the rates for ABC for the same content they offer today, exorbitant fee increases for ESPN, and are trying to force customers who don’t receive ESPN to have to pay for it.
Skyrocketing programming costs, particularly those charged by broadcasters and sports networks, are the greatest contributor to rising cable bills, and ESPN is already the most expensive basic cable channel in history. This behavior by ESPN is anti-consumer, and we urge ESPN and its owner to stop the threats, leave their programming on for customers and focus on negotiating an agreement that is fair for our Optimum customers.”

Disney Statement:
“Our contract with Altice is due to expire soon, so we have a responsibility to make our viewers aware of the potential loss of our programming. We remain fully committed to reaching a deal and are hopeful we can do so. Our company has never had a disruption of service for our family of networks and there is no reason that should change now.”

That's why people cut the cord. frick these assholes.
I should mention I'm referring to ESPN, not this cable company. Kudos to them for standing up for what's right.

I can’t believe I’m getting charged so much more for such a shittier product. Just bring back those damn log competitions and shut up about politics.

Supposedly the Game Day in NYC is a slight at Altice.

I get it, I really do, but I'm not sure if it's ever coming back.
Hell, you've got the president rescinding his invitation to the Warriors because Curry hasn't agreed to go. That would have been discussed on ESPN 15 years ago too.

I hate ESPN as much as the next guy but they own live sports. I only have cable because of ESPN. The cable companies are in big trouble without ESPN.

No one watches anything on ESPN anymore except games, and if they could watch those somewhere else, not even then.

Y'all need to get your parents cable log in and just use WatchESPN.
It's the bees knees.

And ESPN is in trouble even with the cable companies. 10 years ago, even 5, I would have agreed with you, but the cable companies have a bit of a leg to stand on. ESPN can't afford to lose anymore subscribers as it is, and starting feuds with cable service providers isn't going to help that.

Let's be real here - cable companies aren't looking out for their customers, they're looking out for themselves.

ESPN will fall eventually. Once it does, the likes of the NBA and to a lesser extent MLB and other sports will do so with it. Does anyone even watch the NBA anymore? It's amazing to me ESPN pays what they pay for garbage product where you have SJW's try to think their opinions matter to the fan. Can't wait for both ESPN and the NBA to fail, the NBA will be gutted like the NHL was 15 yrs ago.

I heard this next contract period from providers will be a war.
Problem is, you have pussies like Direct tv, charter, att, who bend over to ESPN, where as Dish network tries to stop the insanity, and has begged the providers to stand together, instead those pussies want to steal customers and continue paying ESPN extortion rates.
Providers ALL stand up, these cable channels are fricked, and prices go down. Dish wanted to force ESPN to cut their channels down to the ones needed, not extras forced, same with NBC and discovery, and cbs, but if no one stands with you, you commit suicide, and lose customers by the hour.
And the consumers are also tards, instead of standing by the provider and emailing channels of disdain, they just whine, cry, and then move to new provider who has it, but will be paying more after 12 months.
When Fox 2, local went to war with Dish, i emailed Fox2 and told them to frick off, and how i was enjoying their channels free of charge, from the free antenna dish sent me. And, they can go suck a fat dick. Fox 2 caved.

Just wait till next contract comes up for your local Fox Sports channel.
They always pit consumer vs provider. And people bend over and let fox sports win, every time.

To be fair NBA rating and popularity are higher than ever, but I don't necessarily disagree that sports leagues will have a major readjustment when all this goes down because there is no doubt all networks are over paying for rights to broadcast.

The cash cow from ESPN is over.
NBA,MLB,etc all better prepare for the next contracts.
Now local, is where the $$ will continue to flow in. MLB on their locals are printing money, and paying their teams handsomely. Even the Pirates got a huge deal from Fox Sports Pittsburgh(or root?)

Blacks are the majority. I saw an info graphic on NBA viewership. Blacks make up the plurality of NBA TV viewership. Unfortunately, there are not enough black people to make up for the loss in white viewership. And advertisers want white customers.

The war between espn and the providers has been brewing for your years, someone’s gotta pay for that spending spree ESPN went on
