The real story from last night is the defense

Guice and Etling both looked good. But 27 points isn't a massive change from past openers:

That's the last 10 years, and goes back to our last opening day shutout.
Our average scoring was 32.8. Our average points allowed was 18.7.
Last night was better than the previous 2 years but below the long term average (even for CLM). The defense was much, much better. If we had an average defensive showing, we win 27-19 and the optimism is much more tempered.

Red zone efficiency wasn't the best. 7 trips should've yielded more than 27 points. But that will improve as the offense gets more comfortable.

1. Bama-Same ole song and dance
2. LSU-Exceeded expectations
3. USCe-a much improved team, legit D and QB
4. UGA-solid, exceeded expectations, 2 legit QB's, WR's answered that question
5. AU-legit D, OL and QB need some work
6. MSU-stout D, O on par...Fitz looked pretty decent
7. TAMU-TBA
8. Arky-2 good RB's...D issues
9. Tenn-TBA
10. Miss-BAD defense, O looked good as did Patterson
11. Mizz-Love the O, worst SEC defense in decades
12. UK-some legit skill players, but not SEC quality anywhere else
13. UF-loved the D, worst offense I've ever seen at UF...or anywhere else in the SEC in the last few year. If you combined UF's offense with Mizzou's D, it might be the worst team in college football history 14. Vandy-no running game, decent passing...sub-par D. Might climb this list though...hard to tell between 10-14

If the game would've been in jeopardy we would've scored more points. But it wasn't in jeopardy, and Canada didn't need to get creative when his base plays were working. We won by 27 points lol

Florida will still win the East, lol

So what happens if no game is in jeopardy until auburn? We just won't practice any other contingincies in live games until they're needed that game?
That's a recipe for disaster, and something no top offenses do. See Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State opening games against lower tier competition

You take away good and bad from a game. This one was tough to call out any particular part, but the obvious answer is red zone TD efficiency.
The huge plus to me overall was Etling on 3rd and long, particularly in the 2nd quarter. BYU did exactly what they were supposed to do to Guice. Contain him in the secondary after initial contact. I mean, Guice still advanced, just as he'll d most of the time, but their secondary did their job on Guice all things considered.

One punt, no turnovers. Check that stat for the past ten openers.

We converted several 3rd and longs with intermediate passes and dropped a couple over the top on play-action....just need to minimize penalties and improve red zone offense...it was the first game of the year...they will get better. I felt very hopeful after last night. Defense was lights out without key starters.

It was one game they will continue working on things in the coming weeks leading up to the meat of our schedule. It was obvious from the beginning of this game tht the plan was to control the game while starting to build the confidence of the players. Id say they accomplished this.

Yea the defense looked amazing especially with some pretty big pieces not playing.

No the real story was Aranda. He will be the man other schools wanted by year end if the D continues playing like last night.

The defense was allowed to be dominant because our offense had amazing ball control and dominated time of possession.
It was classic complimentary football. A little more efficiency in the red zone and this team will roll.
