I still have my 97 4Runner with 225K. Every time I take it in for oil or service, etc. mechanics want to buy it from me. My plan is to keep it forever.

mine went over 340k earlier this year.
1997 model. at this point its not worth selling i'm going to keep it around for 4WD purposes in the snow and to see how far i can wind up the odometer.
the toyota dealer here in town gave me free servicing at 300k.

WAY ahead of its time...........

Not just longevity, but design. The land cruisers and even the 1st generation sequoias had the same type of design (more boxy than bubbly). The new land cruisers look more like a highlander than a rugged SUV.

That is an iconic machine. In fact when I picture an SUV in my mind I always think back to that body style 4Runner.

That or late 80s. Had the front solid axle. A true SUV

Hmmm... ok. Some people have a different understanding of "deserve "

I'd say that's an actual truck, not an SUV. The precursor to the SUV's were the Bronco II and the S10 Blazer.
You're mixing up SUV's and crossovers.
A true SUV is on a truck frame. It's a truck without a bed.
Crossovers are designed to look like SUV's, but are on lighter car based frames for better fuel economy. They don't have the same towing capacity, and rarely have the same off road capabilities. Essentially a minivan without sliding doors.

A buddy has a '98 and if I didn't know better I'd think is was a newer truck.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the GOAT and making a comeback in a few years.

What's so great about them?
Ran forever.
Everyone had either this or the Explorer in college in the late 90s. Esp chicks.
Ugly bland styling.
Great resale value.

Yes. I should have added the Jeep.
Toyota Land Cruiser
Range Rover
Chevrolet Surburban
Jeeo Grand Wagoneer
Toyota 4Runner

If I had to quibble, the generation prior to this was better relative in the market place.
The early 90's 4Runner was the best Toyota made, especially with the 5 speed. The 31" tires, smooth 3.0 V6 and high quality materials were class leading. The later models didn't quite have the same feel and the competition was tougher.

Had one (1999) and the answer is no.
It is still running today with probably close to 300,000 miles at this point (sister has it). It has no soul though and you need a soul to be Top 5 all time.

My brother and cousin still have theirs. Both bought them brand new. 99 and 98 models respectively. My brother lost control on a rainy interstate 10 years ago and slid backwards down a steep embankment. Only bumped it into a chain link fence. Still drives it. My cousin only drives hers to work and it still looks like it came off the lot yesterday. Tried to buy it off her years ago and she refused. She plans to give it to her daughter eventually who just started college. I fully expect the thing to be driven by 3 generations.

My step-dad has an 85 or 86 4-runner that still runs.
