Map of the trail network that is being built in sections (some of it has already been built) in East Baton Rouge.
I'm guessing less than 5% of these trails have been built. They have a very long way to go and at a million dollars per mile its going to be extremely expensive.
Hopefully it will be heavily used, but so far from what I've seen the few trails I pass by are not being used hardly at all.
But I don't go by many of the; just the levee trail, the one along Nicholson by LSU, and the ones by the mall and that's it.
ETA: who is supposed to maintain these bike paths? The one along Nicholson between Brightside and LSU is not being kept up. Weeds have grown over half of it and its beginning to silt over in places. Few people use this on a regular basis. This may be why.

They should've paved the levee from downtown to the Laberge.
The levee is already paved between downtown and Farr park and between Ben Hur and that casino. Hopefully the gap between the two sections is paved soon too.

BREC plans on building new, 10-mile bike path in Baton Rouge
Not a bad thing. It should add a lot of mileage and connectivity to their existing trail network.
BREC has a long way to go to make a dent in their master plan to connect their parks with jogging and bike trails.

Well, this is part of BREC's comprehensive bike pathways plan, which would be nice if ever completed.
It takes time, but I think more people will use these trails for exercise when there are more continuous paths around the area that are separate from the roads.

Louisville(or Ohio/Kentucky) did something similar with an old railroad track over the ohio river. Pretty cool
Rails to trails is a national program, there are a half dozen in LA, There is 27 mile converted rail trail from Abita Springs to the North shore.

Memphis turned and old railroad track into a bike and running path that connects several parks through Memphis. It is a hit and people were hesitant as first. I think this would be great for Baton Rouge.
Was the bike path placed exclusively in the ghetto like this one?

They're gonna use it as a 4 wheeler drag strip when it's completed in 2028

Either way, let's not put a path on Perkins Road, or Highland, or Lee Drive, or College Drive, or Essen Lane...let's put it where most of the automobile traffic is... North Baton Rouge. Ok.
Except there are either already paths along most of these roads or plans to build them in the future. Solid effort though
Not sure why so many people here are against a large bike path that the city isn't even paying for

You clearly use the levee trail frequently, any other solid ideas you can propose?

Isn't that where the IBM building is now?

1) I think it will be underutilized
2) And yes taxpayers in EBR are paying for this project, BREC is putting up their match and I know many of us here pay Federal taxes too. It's not "free".
And the reality is this project is jus tone of many that the FEds can't afford. You can say we are just getting our share, but the problem isn't in getting your share; the problem is the Feds should never have gotten in the business of using federal tax dollars to pick and choose local projects to fund.
This project is a good example of how your federal tax dollars are being wasted.

A bike path thru north BR? Are they going to pay for concealed carry classes for potential cyclists?

Of which only about a mile goes through what I would consider a questionable area.

I said the same thing when they built the path from Quail Drive to Kennelworth and was very wrong. I live in Pollard and see plenty of people using the path at all times of the day and even have used it myself several times (which I never would have done had a trail not been there)

I support the construction of these trails- especially if the feds are paying for most of it.
You do know that the feds, state and local municipalities get their money from the same place right? Doesnt matter who writes the check its our tax money being spent and on a list things to spend millions on this wasnt even a thought for me.
The benefit to cost will be horrible and then in 10 years the path will look like crap and we will be responsible for the maintenance and repair.
We need to spend on what we need 1st. Afterwards we can worry about want.

It was going to be spent anyway. May as well spend it in Baton Rouge. The economy can use the boost.
