re: Will 1 full season be enough to know if coaching change was the right move?

more likely a 9-3 regular season. (And that's good enough for many "Mediocrity is King" Louisiana residents)
I'm amazed out how out of touch so many of you are with what is going on around college football. If LSU had gone 9-3 for the last 5 years straight, which according to many is "mediocre", they would be 6th in the country in win %. Only 5 teams in the country have loss less than 15 games in that time. As it is, LSU is 13 out of 113 in win % since 2012. I think everybody is jaded with Alabama being who they have been, and thinking that's a norm and not the outlier it really is.
Obviously LSU has lost games they shouldn't have lately, and the losing streak to Bama is indefensible. But let's stop throwing around the mediocre label for 9/10 win seasons. Those are very good results. Not the championships we want, but not total disasters either

Let's be honest we all want to beat Bama and win another Natty.
That being said if coach O can't beat Saban I think 90% of fans would take 10-2 9-3 and finally have an exciting offense. Basically the same results as CLM but more fun to watch.

Are you suggesting that that LSU football might be better off if Coach Miles had remained the head coach to this day?
I was a Nega Tiger and was banned for being too negative about Coach Miles. I constantly posted that LSU fans were tired of tolerating his ill disciplined teams and poorly coached offenses. Everything that we know now tells me that Coach Miles would be the exact same coach at LSU today as he was when he was fired.
So, I don't know whether it was the right move or not. I lean towards "Yes, it was the right move."
Here are some things that we now know with absolute certainty: There was NOT a "conga line" of Athletic Directors pushing each other out of the way to hire Miles as their HC. A week DID IN FACT pass by after Miles got fired without Miles being hired by a National Championship seeking AD looking for a football coach. And we know that the NFL had no interest in hiring Miles in any capacity.

Yes but if we struggle outside of a catostrophic season O deserves more than a year. I think we will be good but it's a tough tough schedule. Byu and msu are better than ppl probably think. Extra road game. Arky returns entire defense and maybe best qb n sec. state has a very good D.C. And a weapon at qb. Auburn and UF will be solid. And we go on road to tenn. Let all that simmer and u have to like a 10 win season. 9 would be a little disappointing but wouldn't be some horrible finish. I think if O won 9 and Canadas offense was pretty good we would roll into O's 2nd year with positive momentum. Bad offense and scraping 9 wins with good D won't help on the trail for offensive studs.

Champagne preach it. Les "WAS" a top 5 coach, but he was declining severely. Coach O is a welcome change hopefully he crushes it.

" 10-2 9-3"
Many have suggested that 10 win seasons don't mean shite or equal mediocrity , but now 90% of the fans are going to accept 9-3 cause the O will be better??

Doesn't matter what coach O does, a coaching change was the right move.

Wtf? I agree change was the right move, but how tf does that mean it doesn't matter what O does? So they could have hired me as HC just BC a change was needed?
Holy shite.

replacing coordinators is huge. Les struggled with it. It will take 3-4 years to see a full O-recruited roster and hopefully at least that long until he has to replace one or both coordinators.
Once that happens, we can safely pass judgement.

I don't think Coach O gets 3-4 years. If we win only 7 or 8 games the next 2 yrs there will be massive pressure to replace him.

Hard to say after year 1. Look at Mike Archer.
To me, the expectation is an improved offense and a dimished defense just based on personnel changes at the coaching and player level. If the team meets or exceeds, I'm ready for year 2.

I would not pancikbof we go 9-3 or 8-4, provided the offense looks new and innovative.
I still think Mimes left the offensive line way too thin and with the recent attrition, I think the O line will be the teams biggest weakness and cost us a game or 2. O can't fix that I one recruiting class.
As long as the record isn't worse this year, I'm giving O a chance. But expect 10 wins next year.

Unless it goes horribly horribly wrong (something like 2-10), then no. That's really the only would you could make that judgement in year one. Even on the other end if he went like 11-1, one season of success isn't enough to say it was the right or wrong move. So like I say, the only way you can make that call after 1 year is if it's just disastrously bad which isn't allowed at LSU.
I disagree a bit. 11-1 would be pretty damn impressive with this team and would basically prove that O was the right hire.
A season spectacularly bad or spectacularly good will say everything about O.
A middle of the road season just means we don't know yet.

This will be Os best year, earning him two more. Then we will shoot for a qualified HC, or just give Grimes 4 million a year

Only if it's a terrible season, then we'll know it was a bad decision. If he does well it could still fall apart if he can't manage the whole program. That's what happened to Archer. He took over a machine that Arnsparger had built. LSU was loaded with talent. He went 10-1-1 and finished #5 in the nation, I believe. Then his inability to recruit, and to maintain discipline, drove the program into a ditch.
I'll add that if he wins the national championship it will vet the decision to hire him. Even if he drives us into a ditch after that it would have been worth it to me.

It isn't like Oregon just started recruiting for LSU but I agree in the importance of measuring him by recruiting. I think we can start doing that in year one. So I'm leaning more towards judging him by his first recruiting class rather than how many wins he gets for this season. Right now he's loosing that battle but that's because the season hasn't started yet and there are so many unknowns for other teams to take advantage of on the recruiting trail. If he and Canada can do enough to generate excitement about the offense (whatever that takes) they can still put together a solid class and that would earn him another year in my mind.

LSU puts more players in the NFL than Alabama
No, we don't. Bama puts more players in the NFL than LSU. Bama has the more talented team by a substatial margin. This is borne out by...
Bama having the (much) higher recruiting rankings
Bama having more players going to the NFL in the last few years
Bama winning championships
Any stats that suggest otherwise are buttressed by LSU's superiority 10 years ago.

Getting rid of Lester was a breath of fresh air! Snow flakes on this rant need to give Coach O a chance! It will take some time to learn Canada"s offense, but we will be fine!

We didn't do that. We only replaced Cam and we did that ten months ago. O at LSU three years. We have other coaches here two on more years. We have had a number of years in a row where recruiting was judged to be top ten in the nation by those not in Louisiana.
This is not the normal fire and hire situation. Even in this decline from 2013-2015, LSU still ranked second in the SEC for overall winning percentage nationally. A hell of lot more will be expected from O than what was expected from other LSU coaches who were hired after a losing LSU coach was fired.
Three to four years to recover is ridiculous. O needs to win ten this season and he needs to figure out a way to stop losing talented Louisiana HS players NOW.
