While you're on the topic of deaths that made a political impact, Matthew Shepard.

Also not mentioned in this thread, Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner

Oh and Heath Ledger. Ill never see the Joker the same way again

In usa, Michael Jackson.

You people comparing Diana's death the Michael Jackson are insane. Absolutely insane.

There is no telling how differently the civil rights movement would have played out with MLK's steadying influence. His murder injected a bitterness into the entire movement which also fueled the backlash we are still seeing today

This gets my vote. MLK would be shocked and disgusted by today's world.

These two men, had they not been killed, might very well have enabled us to avoid the hopelessly poisonous political and racial environment we live in today.

He said "might". So settle down people. It's the OT not poli board.

All those who died on September 11 in the WTC and other attacks. Been at war ever since, with no clear end in site.

Globally? Without question. Elvis might be competitive in the U.S.

Elvis is definitely competitive globally. Come look at the wall in front of Graceland where people from all over the world write their names and where they're from. They come from all over the world to the shithole that is South Memphis, that's pretty a pretty strong pull right there.

Was Elvis shocking though? I am honestly asking as I was 4 at the time? Was his decline and drug use common knowledge? Or was it well hidden? He was essentially Michael Jackson but just a whole lot cooler.

He was not a pedophile like Jackson was accused, but he definitely bruised up some statuatory rape laws in his day.

Macho Man Randy Savage.

So bad arse God had to use two finishers to take him out, a heart attack and a car crash.

Elvis was a bigger shocker than MJ... yes he had gotten fat and all that but his popularity is still far and above MJ and it's not even close.

Absolutely.

It's one of those "where were you when you heard" moments. It wasn't expected by the general public.

It was far more acceptable in those days. Hell, a good chunk of the population got married as teens.
