Microsoft's next move with "Minecraft" is even more dramatic: An update coming to "Minecraft" this year unifies all versions of the game — if you're playing on an iPhone, you can team up with a friend on Xbox One and craft a world together. A friend playing the game in an Oculus Rift VR headset on a PC could jump in, and another friend on the Nintendo Switch could too. It's hard to overstate how big of a deal that is, which is why it's so unfortunate that a single company refuses to participate: Sony.

As a huge Sony fanboy since the first PS and FF7 I got my switch in March and havent looked back. (ETA: I love the path Nintendo is charting) My kids play minecraft and it would be awesome for them all to play together (2 daughters, and a son) with me between our PC, the switch, PS4 and ipads/ipods.

Minecraft, the new version will not be released on PS4 and they plan to pull the old one, because Sony won't support cross-play.

Feeling better and better that I'm drifting towards Nintendo this gen. They seem to be "getting it". My ps4 got 1000's of hours of play and will continue to be my main console but frick Sony for not moving forward with cross play.

Nintendo is notorious for staying closed and even THEY are doing it. Get with the times Sony.

Part of the issue here appears to be Sony not wanting to allow cross-play with the other versions of Minecraft. Sony has its reasons for saying no, but it appears those conversations are ongoing, so there is some hope left. The old console version of Minecraft will be removed from sale after the new edition launches for Xbox One and Switch.

It sounds like this means the PS4 edition could be gone unless a deal can be reached between Microsoft and Sony. However, if you already own Minecraft for PS4, or any other console, you can continue to play it and its associated mini-games, though there will be no further updates.

Seems like a pretty stupid move on Sony's part. It's just highest sold console game EVER, no big deal

There's like 3 games for the Switch and yet you haven't "looked back" at all the great exclusive games for Sony's console that have been released since then?

This is pretty much what Sony has always done.

They want to go their own way and frick everyone else about 99% of the time.

It is their culture.

Don't really give a shite about Minecraft cross play because of Microsoft's stance. Sony is never ever going to allow Xbox Live sign in on the system.

Now Rocket League a game I actually care about, that's the one I hope Sony changes their stance on. Also no need for a different sign in so I think Sony will eventually do it.

This has been known since e3 and we have debated this already.

No way in hell Sony will want their users to make an xbox live account.

I'm still not sure what exactly Minecraft is, and at this point, I'm afraid to ask.
