We have close to the highest effective tax rate in the country but some of the worst infrastructure. 10+% sales tax, income tax, property tax, all add up to politicians buddies with contracts and entitlements for voters. I have zero confidence taxes will pay for shite. The toll route is the ONLY way this ever gets done.

People in Shreveport and Monroe don't want to pay for a new bridge in BR. Although this is short sighted and provincial, it's a problem. Tolls are the only solution. I'm not sure what the holdup is. (I mean, other than pissant politicians in WBR and Iberville fighting over where to put the bridge.)
Just build the fricking thing.

I sincerely think that if state politicians could figure out a way to physically move highway infrastructure from Baton Rouge to New Orleans, they would.
The few nickels the state has does not get spent in Baton Rouge. It's absurd that I-10 retains the same decking, lighting, width, and guardrails as it did 60 years ago or that Airline Highway is still only 4 lanes in most of EBR.

The "old" bridge is closed till Monday, part of the issue
Like I've said here before, the "new" bridge was suppose to by pass BR when built. Our politicians moved it downtown for their benefit.....

People had the chance to vote on the gas tax and they didnt want to put their money where their mouth is.
That gas tax would have funded numerous projects. People use the excuse " I dont think any of it would have gone to the right places", but the fact is, people just didnt want to pay it.
Now they will be paying the ultimate price. Priceless hours of their life wasting away in traffic. I guess their time is worthless to them.

A bypass paid for with tolls is the answer.

. I would say we halfway kept up until Katrina. Improvements before then made a difference and things were getting better. Been downhill since then no matter how much money they throw at it.
Totally agree.

The gas tax was the only fair way to do it. Gas tax is the only tax I will vote for. They can take the property tax and stick it up their arse.

Nah, you're wrong. As someone pointed out earlier, we have one of the highest local effective tax rates in the country and our local services are absolute shite. Local politics, not local funding, is the problem.

We won't get a new bridge in the next 10 years so I suggest opening up another ferry around addis

I understand anti-tax sentiment. I understand NIMBYs. But when will the people of this state collectively decide that this shite has to end, and resolve to find a way to make it happen?
I think you answered your own question.
This is the area where even the most rednecked of the republicans should understand a strong state is needed, but yet, they will always always always do absolutely nothing.

Toll lanes in addition to free lanes work great in Texas.
Look at the redo of 635 in Dallas for an example.
That was a massive project and they mostly kept traffic flowing while the did it.

I use the by pass all the time. No need to use the interstate road system.

What yall should do is plan a rolling blockade around the area the legislature meets for a couple of weeks. Show them how it feels to sit in cars for a few hours each day. It would not take but a few dozen collaborators with a good plan.

What a crock of shite! Sorry, but you're way off base in saying that.
Source of revenue isn't the problem here. It's absolutely what the politicians choose to do with it. 100%.

I will never understand the following mindset:
- Here exists a fixable problem.
- We have the authority and ability to provide the fix.
- Instead we will let it continue to suck.
I see it in business and of course in Louisiana politics.
