Anthony Davis says Rajon Rondo can ‘help take Pelicans to the next level’

Davis also expressed optimism about the Pelicans’ new guard tandem of Rondo and Holiday, giving New Orleans a pair of dual threats. Holiday has been one of the Pelicans’ most important defenders, while Rondo was selected NBA All-Defense first or second team four times, every season from 2009-12 (he was All-NBA third team in ‘12).
"They are two tenacious defenders,” Davis said. “Jrue is a stronger, taller defender, but Rondo has those long arms and huge hands. He does a great job of getting steals. Both of them, on the offensive and defensive end, I’m willing to put them up against any backcourt in the league.”

For what we are paying for RR, I don't see how anyone can be pissed at this move.
Playoffs last year showed what he is capable of bringing to team
Great relationship with DC so helps with resigning
Cheap contract

lol if AD thinks that then it's obvious he doesn't read this board (praise the Lord!)

defensively Rondo-Holiday are up there for sure.
quite a few backcourts i'd take above that thought lol
but you gotta back your team

Hopefully it's correctable because his lack of defense has been attributed to lack of giving a shite rather than lack of ability, but Rondo has not been a good defender recently.

It is just getting the effort from him and you have to hope Erman can challenge him in that respect. Regardless he is a better defender than Frazier/Buddy from last year, so it should theoretically be an upgrade for a bunch of Jrue minutes.
As everyone has noted the past couple of years, Rondo is a good defender when he wants to be. National broadcast games and playoffs, he seems to become a better defender and player overall. It is a matter of keeping him engaged when the lights are low and the arena is half filled.

From what I've seen, everybody is expecting Rondo to start. So he is kind of getting screwed, salary wise, if he does. If he has a really good year and is a solid starter, wouldn't he be looking for a huge bump in pay next summer when he is a free agent? Like 15M+?

He'd be 32 and people will forever question his attitude, even if his tone is completely different than his time in Dallas (Heck, it was different last year). I don't think he'll ever hit 15mil+

George Hill is 31 and just got 3y/57M. If Rondo has the same type of success or comparable, he would deserve a big increase, right?

Hill never had that negativity surrounding him. Hill could also shoot, to be fair. lol
I just think its one of those things, his attitude can be completely different and people would still crucify him. Look at Boogie, media/people do it all the time and in his time here he's been totally respectful to the media and a team-first guy

No doubt, I agree with you. But it just occurred to me that he will be free agent. If he has a good year or a great one, he is going to want to cash in. Can't blame him for that..

On the flip side, he has moved around alot these last few years. There is something to be said with staying in one place. As long as the Pels dont ridiculously lowball him, i think he'll re up.

Well he signed a 2y/28M deal with the Bulls and they bought him out. He is only getting about 3M this year, which is a big step down. I'm sure he has a bit to prove and can't be happy to take the pay cut.
What do you think would be reasonable? If he has a solid year..

If he's staying with the Pels they can't offer him more than $4 million unless they give him the MLE which in this case might be the taxpayer MLE for only $5.2 million. Those are the only options they have to pay him next year because they won't have cap space. If there is much of a market for him the Pels just can't compete.

So basically he is a one year rental or a total disaster?
Posted on 7/26/17 at 1:03 pm to brmark70816
Possibly, but I think you're overestimating how much of a market there will be if he does well. He'll be 32 and he'll still have every bit of baggage he had before. He's not not an a-hole just because the Pels are uniquely equipped to deal with him.
If things go well then the Pels can offer him a starting role on a rising playoff team. The most another playoff caliber team would likely offer him would be part of the MLE for a backup role. Non playoff teams probably wouldn't even look at him, too old with too much baggage.

Player valuations just don't make sense to me. I know most of it comes down to right time, right place (ala Holiday). But he was getting 12M a year last year to be the starting PG on a playoff team. If he has a solid year, we make the playoffs and he is a major contributor. Its going to a major insult to offer him anything less than 10M a year. But everybody is projecting him to be a 3M a year player next year and I don't see how that happens..

Between the draft and a PG heavy FA where lots of PGs changed teams, I just don't see much of a market. I also think Chicago probably bid against themselves because they were desperate.

I think we can all agree that if Rondo is a significant contributor to out success then the Pels will make the moves necessary to retain him.
