TSA Precheck

I fly infrequently, and am now 58. The last several domestic flights, I have received PreCheck without asking for it.
Since my travel schedule is increasing, I wonder if PreCheck is "automatic" for my age group? Would gladly pay for the privilege, but if it comes free, I will pocket the cash.

It's not. Same has happened with me 3x in a row last year then reverted back to poor/back to waiting in line status
What airline(s) did you fly? SW is when I got mine.

It isn't automatic due to age.
It was automatic for my wife because she apparently is the only person in the US with her complete name. It's the only thing we could figure out because once TSA Precheck began she always had it.

I have a retarded French Louisiana surname so I always get "randomly" selected gor the extra search outside the xray thing.

Considering my family name ends if I don't have kids, and none of my relatives share my name, I am 100% no one else in this country has my name, and I've never gotten the Precheck.

I used to fly regularly with some coworkers in their late 50's - early 60's. They got the random TSA precheck boarding pass about 75% of the time. I only received it twice over about 5 years.
I just signed up last week for the 5 year TSA precheck for $85. Finally decided it was worth it to avoid the hassle.

PSA if you travel out of the country or think you might, spend the extra ~$20 and get Global Entry, it includes precheck.

airlines can "opt in" frequent fliers...I fly every other week on SWA, domestic and Mexico/Caribbean, and get precheck 95% of time...I am so spoiled, when I don't get it I am pissed

First time it was Delta. This last time was American.

My mom gets it all the time, especially with American. I paid for pre-check and my husband gets it if we're on the same ticket locator.

I wondered about that. My wife has it for work travel, so if we book a flight together would I get it also ?

I assume, yes. he didn't start getting pre-check until my application was approved.

If you are on the same ticket with someone that has precheck you will also get it.

Well shite I wish I had known that. I got it when I went renew my TWIC and sent the wife to get hers a few weeks later, could have saved that $80.

Is that a recent thing? Because my husband and I both have it, but there have been a couple of instances where the airline didn't have one of our known traveler numbers and that person did not get precheck.

Not sure how recent, but at least for the last 18 months. Each of us received a TSA precheck boarding pass when we were booked on the same confirmation with a coworker that had a KTN. It's happened every time since he got a KTN.

That's not necessarily true. If you don't have Precheck then you might luck out and get it if traveling with someone who does. There have been plenty of times I have seen it work out the other way where one person gets it and the other has to wait in the regular line.
If you fly one time per year, it works out to like 17/year. Worth it in my opinion. We signed my daughter up for it as well as soon as she hit 14. That's the cutoff age for getting it automatically if you are traveling with someone who has a KTN.

No, you will both not get it. It's only given to the person who has it, and then the other person may randomly get it. I've had pre-check for years and recently flew and my girlfriend did not get it on her ticket. (I had purchased both tickets).
