Over the last decade obviously Quarter Back and depth at middle linebacker have been our Achilles Heel. We have had a ton of talent all over the board with the exception of those positions. It was so obvious how much better we became when Kendall Beckwith replaced you know who in the line up and it cost us the Florida game when he went out. Kevin Minter also was great at Line Backer but when he got hurt at Florida it cost us the game.
I am very hopeful that coach "O" is changing this with Miles Brennan at QB and the recruitment of great talent at linebacker. The future is bright at LSU.

Sure... Offensive line will be the issue this year though

FIFY

The talent has been there. We just haven't developed that talent into anything useful.

Hope so but lets wait until he actually performs. I really hope he is the next great college QB but high school stats don't translate to college performance. Not trying to be negative but hanging the name tag too soon

I do agree with your analysis of our position weakness and would add a few good offensive linemen to the list over the years would have been a big help

Don't use any literary references deeper than the "How to Pick Up Babes" article in Maxim.

You'll confuse 98 percent of Rant posters.

Just my take, the achilles heel has not been a position but a coordinator....the OFF Coordinator. Canada, with a balanced OFF that has the ability to put the ball downfield with explosive plays, will totally open up LSU recruiting opportunities across the entire OFF. This is a huge season for the OFF. Perform well, and you will obviously see it in the W-L column AND on the recruiting trail.

Highsmith, Sheppard, Minter, both Beckwiths?

I'm sure I'm missing some, but I don't think LSU has been missing talent at the Mike position.

My opinion on the struggles in the run game past 2012 was lack of talent and depth at defensive tackle.

And we lost to UGA in 13 because of youth in the secondary.

But carry on.

and you're thinking of the wrong player.

He had a career-best 20 tackles and 2.0 sacks against Florida, and his 17 solo tackles versus Florida was an LSU single-game record.

I disagree, I think LSU Football's Achilles heel was Les Miles.

There's no secret to what the problem is. Qbs that aren't developed and a awful offensive system. Hopefully Canada can bring some life to the offense and develop narcisse and brennan.no idea how you thought mlb was a problem. Our lb crew might not be bama lvl but has been extremely solid.

QB, Defensive Tackle, OL, MLB in that order. When we finally get a really good QB we will be tough to contend with.

QB has been the Tigers' perennial Achilles' tendon, and if Etling is the starter, this year will be no different.

So far the last 10 years have seen one excellent Tiger QB: Mettenberger.

These kind of posts demonstrate:

1. Posters here don't really pay attention

2. But merely regurgitate what they've heard.

Without true qb development and a system that fits your talent, qbs will always seem to be the blame. It's the chicken not the egg.

The true x-factor will be how does Canada's offense fit in the SEC. It all starts with scheme

The talent has been there at QB, just not the development or offensive system. There was not one good starting QB at LSU that Miles took straight from high school and developed year one. Jefferson had a great sophomore year (in spite of a dreadful OL and zero rushing threat), Lee was pretty efficient as a redshirt senior, but that was about it for a man that ran the program for over 10 years. You can't tell me that many QBs were just awful to begin with. We're not talking NFL or anything, just good college QBs. I've seen guys that couldn't start or lost their starting jobs to mediocre players yet were stars on other teams like Nathan Peterman - Tenn to Pitt, Clint Trickett - FSU to WVU, Jacoby Brissett - UF to NCST, Jake Coker - FSU to Bama, Jeff Driskel - UF to LA Tech, etc).

Once, and I do mean once, LSU gets consistently good QB play, the dynasty will begin. LSU is the only school with top 5 talent over the last 5 years that hasn't won a national championship. Hell, we haven't even come close. Our last 11+ win season was in 2011. Penn St has had an 11 win season since we last did, think about that one. A school that was under heavy sanctions and in the same division as Meyer and Harbaugh. Did it with an awesome back in Barkley and a redshirt freshman QB who started weak and finished incredibly strong over the season. A playmaker QB in an open offense. Really wish we give one of the younger guys a chance at QB this year.

Coaching has been the Achilles heel in my opinion. A good coach will utilize the talent he has according to the players skills. Let's hope coaching doesn't continue to be our biggest obstacle concerning LSU football.

Other than the blip on the radar with Welter starting at MLB, LSU has been more than fine there. You went from Shepard to Minter to Beckwith. Minter had seeming 57 tackles against UF. I would say LSU pathetic offensive approach and WR's dropping balls left and right cost LSU that game.

LSU has had talent at QB. It's just hard to do anything when the HC's number one objective is not to make his QB a playmaker but rather someone who just hopefully doesn't frick things up. It's hard enough to be a QB in the SEC. It's even harder when your HC figuratively ties one arm behind your back. Over the last 6-7 years Alabama hasn't really had QB's that were significantly more physically talented than LSU. The difference is they found ways to play to their QB's strengths, while Les went into every game watering down his offense at all costs just to make sure his QB didn't screw up.

I don't think Etling is a "all time" QB, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him look like an All American this season compared to the QB's in Les's offense. Finally we have an OC/HC who realizes the QB is the engine that runs the offense. Not the trailer you drag along hoping it doesn't fall off the hitch when the road gets bumpy

I don't know that it has totally been a talent issue. The offensive philosophy and inability to coach guys up have created a void at QB. No team gets a 5 star QB every year, but other teams consistently have gotten the best out of their players.

I'm really hoping the new coach staff will allow us to turn the corner.

This is comically wrong. Offensive line and QB if you want just two positions. Sure we've been weak at QB, but look at how many offensive linemen we've put in the NFL. It's hard to remember a year when we didn't have a future NFL player at MLB.

You can fall back on the depth point, but when have we suffered from it, aside from Beckwith's sophomore season? But the oline has been around the SEC average throughout the Miles years. In most seasons we have one or two future NFL players out of five olinemen. That's terrible.
