NOLA crime at a crucial tipping point

So says LSU Ciminologist
quote:
“If you can't protect 208 Bienville Street, what can you protect?” said criminologist Dr. Peter Scharf. “That's what the average guy in the street is saying.”
Scharf says tourists and convention organizers have taken notice of the violent crime that keeps happening in the French Quarter. And if the trend continues and the city’s murder rate increases, Scharf believes the tourism industry will decline.
“The country now is again gaining awareness of what the violent crime realities are here and the risks of something happening to them,” he said. “I think you're close to a tipping point the wrong way.”
And in the case of keeping troopers in the city, Scharf says it pulls resources away from other areas around the state. With a state budget crisis and law enforcement agencies cutting back, moving troopers to New Orleans fills a void - but it can also create one.

Funny thing is, the leadership in NOLA doesn't care about any of this. None.
Their job isn't to protect the citizens, only demonize those they disagree with, then fleece them.
This is what happens when you elect Proggies to destroy your city and state. EBR, NOLA, and now the state capital are all witnessing this.
Cue the apologists with "but it was worse in the 90's" babble.

Just pull all the police out and we can have Hamsterdam in Louisiana.

Clearly, more statues must pay the price.

Crime in NOLA is a major problem, but stuff like this is complete hyperbole.

Not when tourism is your city's sole ticket to survival.

I will destroy as many statues as necessary, to get crime under control.

Of course it is.
A great way to never fix it is to immediately label any sort of progress toward it as "hyperbole".
Good work! You'll do whatever it takes to keep your voting bloc in place. We know this already.

the FQ has been a hot spot of crime for years and years. This board only cares about it now bc it's been collectively triggered by an admittedly douchey mayor.

No it isn't.
However the cost of living in new Orleans has really shot up in the last 10 years. It isn't reflective with what you get in return, whether that is schools, streets, utilities or safety.

Crime in the French Quarter has never been tolerated since the city is so dependent on that area projecting an image of raucous good times.
To think this can't negatively impact the city is shortsighted.

Which part? The part about convention and event organizers taking notice?
I happen to sit two boards that organize national/international events. I argued against going to New Orleans with an event this past May when it hit the planning calendar. Attendance at the event was 60% of what it was in Atlanta two years prior and 40% of what it was in Las Vegas last year. Guess what most of the event reviews were "I will not return to New Orleans" or some variation.
The other board just had to go to Baltimore this year with a different event - preregistration for that event is roughly 60% of what it was the previous year at this point.
Even if a board doesn't pay attention when planning an event, they will dang sure take notice when people stop attending because of the locale.

Mitch is parading around Essence Fest and climate change seminars claiming to be a champion for the inner city.
Narassistic Impotent cocksuckers like Mitch never let facts ruin a good narrative.

True but here is some of the rub. Kazillions of dollars were pumped into New Orleans AND other areas as a result of Katrina. Fine, as we do same for other areas brought low by Mother Nature. What we don't witness is the self inflicted wound of significant crime as seen in the Crescent City and some, like me, see nothing less than an ungrateful populace, right or wrong. I understand areas such as Chicago are likewise inundated with crime and I know my view about New Orleans is simply an emotional view. However, other areas humbled by Mother Nature don't go to shat in a handbag.
However, growing up there, she has lost her former greatness and charm and somebodies better get a handle on this blight. It can be done but I fear the will is not present to change course as her city leaders are failing the populace.

Do you have a thesaurus open when you post?

The Scharff guy has been studying and commenting on NO crime for years and is not prone to hyperbole. But keep telling yourself it's all just peachy.

I don't believe so.
There have been and will likely always be tough, rough areas in any city/community, were present when I lived in the GNOMarea, but dang, not like this....Makes me sad

No, New Orleans now has the highest murder rate in the country - Chicago is like 6th.
People now get robbed in broad daylight on Canal Street and Bourbon Street. I just quit going because taking common sense precautions will no longer make you a lot safer.
