as long as we aren't allowed to call social pathologies, pathologies (and treat them as such), it's a lost cause, though
Yep, but we neither call them that or treat them as such and then get outraged over this type of behavior. Its a cycle of stupid from all concerned.

But I often wonder: What if our prisons were "nice"? In other words, what if they were clean, well run, disciplined? What if the inmates were given educations while in prison? What if they were mostly separated except during "classes" and not allowed to form gangs, etc?
They have this already. It's called public school.

But its the second stage, the "treatment" that you know all to well is fricked up, the way we treat the problem only perpetuates the problem.

I love how we have to make excuses and blame others for acting like fricking animals.

Meh. Jarvis is generally an idiot, but I don't see anything wrong with this column. Seems like he's praising Covenant House for the work they do

There are two things the Federal Government can do to alleviate some of this.
1. Homeless or Troubled kids (aged 16-25) who pass a psychological test should be given the opportunity to join a special branch the Armed Forces and let the military retrain back into society them by providing them with job & societal skills and a salary. Give them hope instead of throwing them in the gutter where they become lost souls. Its cheaper and more productive long term to implement this.
2. If the Homeless or Troubled kids don't pass the psychological tests then they are sent to a medical & behavioral health facility to help them cope with their mental challenges. By allowing psychologically impaired people onto the streets without medication or support is an important cog in allowing society to breakdown.
3. Children (8-15) who have been arrested more than one time should be enrolled into a military style ROTC program to prepare them for entry into the US Military.
Those are the only steps I honestly see to fixing the problem within the next five years.

This would be a worthwile exercise. Don't we already have a diversion program for youth offenders that uses some sort of quasi military school/training?

We are a city with high rates of poverty, unemployment, discrimination and -- not surprisingly, given all that -- crime.

frick no. We want only the BEST people in our military, not some criminal rejects. If you put criminals in the military, they will do what criminals do -- commit crimes: rape, war atrocities, molesting children, stealing from their fellow Soldiers, raping the deployed Soldiers' wives. No way.
Incarcerate the little bastards -- I don't care what society does with them, but don't frick up my unit cohesion with that shite and don't put them on my military installations.

Yes we do and these are State programs that are completely separate from the US military. I think they might use some State National Guard assets and personnel.
The US military's job is not to provide rehabilitation for juvenile delinquents. Maybe that was the case 100 years ago but it is a bad idea today.

I get where you're coming from, I really do but two of the best people I served with were former gang members, one was a skinhead from California and the other was a black baw from Chicago and a gangster disciple. Have you served a day in your life? Because if you had you would know theft is rampart in every military branch. People steal gear and anything they can get their hands on, everyone steals. Raping the deployed soldiers wives?! Bro Jody takes care of everyone's wife during deployments. The military is/always will be a great option for troubled young men, I say this now because I was once one of the dumb arse 18 year olds who should probably be in the prison rite now but the Marine Corps changed my life in 2010. The military isn't for everybody and frick the guys in the attack video but what you're saying is pure ignorance.

Covenant House definitely does good work, but I question why they need to be located right next to the FQ.

We can only hope that people who are so committed to justice don't give up on New Orleans. We are a city with high rates of poverty, unemployment, discrimination and -- not surprisingly, given all that -- crime. We need the help of everybody who is passionate about standing up for justice.
UUA just needs to go home and send the CIA/FBI to come in and and start LOCKING EM UP. Unfortunately, some breeds of people you just can't help. They need to be hung or locked up.

The Army already has had its problems with gangs and active gang members serving active duty.
