well the first thing you have to realize about nolan ryan is he pitched for a LONG time

he has one of the most impressive careers ever by volume

but that doesn't mean he was the "Best" in any given year

Fernando Valenzuela in 1981 and Steve Bedrosian in 1987.

One year, Ryan led the NL in ERA and strikeouts, and finished 8-16.

ETA. That was the first time the league leader in those two categories did not win the Cy Young, much less finish with a losing record.
