Baseball guys ... please explain something to me.

Am I the only one that is bothered by the 1st inning, leadoff hit ... #2 guy up ... 0 outs obviously ... and, they make it sound like the only options for LSU are to either hit & run or sac-bunt. Or ... perhaps believed to be the best options.
I guess I get it ... but, I just don't like it.
It's not like 1 run will likely win this game.
It's the first fricking inning ... OSU went 3 up/down ... unless we flat-out don't think #2 hitter can hit ... why not just let him try to get a damn base hit?
(which...incidentally...has been working out well in the bottom half of the order)
Again... I get it ... just don't like it in the 1st inning.
What am I missing here?
(I realize that I will get smart-arse responses from some of the baseball snobs/pricks.)

TD Ameritrade isn't exactly known for a power game.

If you do it and score first...then do it again later in the game and score a run..and so on, the runs start to add up. I have no problems with it.

I played baseball until I was 14 so I can explain.
Bunt was dumb.
Hit and run was the right play to avoid DP.

Because you want to put the first run on the board in games like this. It's a mental edge.
We are 33-3 when scoring first.

If a player isn't making good decisions at the plate, or isn't seeing the ball well, sometimes the coach takes away that variable from the player, and simplifies his responsibility

It's so we move a guy into scoring position while minimizing the chance of a double play.

He shouldn't be batting 2nd in that situation.

I hate the bunt there. Outs are way too precious to be giving them one in the 1st. The hit and run, however, can oftentimes lead to big innings. That would have been the better call of the 2 for sure. And Burke was saying it's not much of a gamble because dude throws so slow he's probably not gonna make Freeman miss or pop up.

I see both sides of the argument. You get the bunt down and now you have your 3-4 hitters to get a hit and score an early run. Early run gets you some confidence and momentum.

Well ... so much for that theory.
(I know, though.)

It's much easier to get a bunt down than a full swing. A bunt ensures no double play while a hard hit on the hit and run can still get you at 2nd.

The whole job of the #2 hitter is to move the lead off guy over for the heart of the lineup to get him in.
The same way a dlineman's job is to eat up blocks so the LBers can make a play.

Fair enough ... I did not know that stat.
I appreciate the reasonable response.

Kinda... he still has all the skill sets that got him there in the first place, which tells me it's more about what's between the ears than anything... think of it as a way to manufacture a slump buster

Baseball gods. You dont argue with them. You just accept it.
