re: First Time Using Uber: It's basically a taxi service with a cool app

You do know the drivers are rating you as well, right?
I'd be curious what rating you have as a rider, now. I doubt 2) or 3) are going to give you a real good rating, haha.

It's hard to appreciate Uber if you weren't similarly situated during pre-Uber times.
Uber isn't perfect but it absolutely changed how I live and travel. Anyone who lived in a city like Atlanta or Dallas where you might wait 30-45 minutes for an unreliable cab to show up (or not) and give you and your couple of buddies a 25-30 dollar ride 4 miles away, and then tell you the card machine is down, knows the value.

Best way to put it.
OP's experiences are obviously not great, but that's just transportation services in general. While a ride is technically a service, they are not in the customer satisfaction industry the way that a bartender or waiter is. Their job is to get you from point A to point B. They don't need to have perfect English. Hell, I had a deaf driver in Sacramento.
You can't go into Uber expecting some person kissing your arse like you're in a restaurant. That's not the level of people they hire. I used to LOL @ friends getting pissy at Yellow Cab a few years back and calling at 2-3AM to complain to the dispatcher. Yeah, like they give a shite That's just not that industry's concern.

I took a few in Bangkok to non-touristy spots. You can imagine, English isn't exactly flying around the cabin. Dropping the pin on the destination was all that needed to be done. 5 stars.
I have a half day in Lima coming up in two weeks where I'm planning to use it to go have a nice dinner before flying home.

Honestly you sound a bit stuck up and dickish.
You're using a cheap transportation service to get from point A to point B. This isn't a limo or chauffeur.
As long as I get where I need to be in a timely manner I give 5 stars. I don't expect much else for $5-10. Apparently you do.
I'll give you that a couple of your rides were not satisfactory, but that's what the rating system is for.
It's still way better than Taxi's most of the time. I've used Uber and Lyft probably over 100 times, and maybe have a handful of unsatisfactory rides.

Is there a point in your Rider ranking that Uber kicks you out? I'd assume certainly, but I've never heard of it. Not that I think OP is anywhere close to that point.

I've only had three official rides. I can't imagine I have a real score. I may use it 2 or 3 times more through tomorrow. Then I will look at it.
As for me being stuck up and dickish: Maybe I am. I'm not a big fan of Latin culture. Everyone down here is really loud, and yelling all the time. Even when they're having fun they kind of get on my nerves. To me, the perfect ride is one in total silence. If that makes me a stuck up dick, then I guess I am. This place is just not my cup of tea.

Apparently not.

I checked my rating and was surprised I'm a 4.5 over about 20 rides, that feels low for a rider rating. I've never had a bad experience with a driver, never made a request, never had food/drink issues, and never not been outside ready. I don't smoke and so no smell brought with me. I've also only had solo rides so it's not been issues with other passengers.
Maybe I get lower ratings because of gps directions mess my home causes. I'm the third house off the corner but uber sends drivers around the block for some reason. That'd piss me off when driving so maybe I just get punished.

Let me be specific: A perfect ride is silence. Except for normal courteous discourse. How are you? Would you like more air conditioning? Have a good day sir, etc. They can get a 5 from me without that. I don't care if they say a word.
However, if they start talking to me, asking a question, etc then they need to speak English.
Just now I had a ride that was a 5. I left the meeting and I needed to go to a bank (standard afternoon hookers and blow cash run). So I put the bank into my Uber destination. But as soon as we got to the bank, I wanted him to stay there while I ran in and got cash. So I told him what I wanted to do. And he was like: No problem.
As soon as we pulled into the bank parking lot I changed the destination in the app to my hotel. So when I came out, he already knew where I was going next and it was in his phone.
It was all smooth. But we needed a couple of exchanges to make sure we were on the same page. It was nice that he spoke English. I rated him 5 and gave him a $5 tip on a $16 ride. I thought it was a good exchange.

Dinged him a star for not speaking English when it seems he couldn't or didn't have command of the language is kind of a jerk move. Based on what you've said it sounds like he would have been dinged for speaking poor English. Poor guy.

I'm with OP, learn the damn language if you're going to be driving around in the US. I want my driver to be able to read signs, take special directions if need be. It's a safety thing as well.
Every smelly cab driver is forced to learn English via municipal codes.

I used uber in nyc and it was incredible.
Clicked a few buttons and got picked up from times square within 3 minutes and brought to new jersey at 1 am.
Pretty incredible. Also took it into manhattan. Drivers were nice. Service was great.

I'm in Houston on an overnight layover and just had a Nigerian, a Cameroon and an Ethiopian driver. Had kickass conversations with all three. There are times when I want to just chill in silence, but chatting with the driver is one of the things I like most about Uber.

Never Ubered before, but want to try it on an upcoming trip to DC. Does the app tie to a credit or debit card? Do I hand the driver cash? Not sure how the payment end of it works..

Just download app, sign up for account. You can put in a CC or paypal or some other payment methods (not bitcoin or ethereum... yet... haha)
I've got like 3 CC's on my one account, depending on whether it's work or personal or my wife's company. It's super intuitive and easy... which... is one of the things I appreciate about the world in which we live. Companies are SO FREAKING GOOD at making entry point super easy and accessible to anyone. It's like a damned science to get you up and running as quickly and painlessly as possible, which is such an evolution from the early days of online life, where you had to be determined and a great researcher to figure out how to do anything involving e-commerce and doing things "digitally."

Get a referral for some free rides. Expect at least $5-6 per ride minimum. DC is a walkable town but Uber is cheap.
