The seven U.S. Navy sailors that had been missing after the U.S.S Fitzgerald collided with a merchant vessel have been found dead.
The crash happened early Saturday morning off the Eastern coast of Japan, and left a large puncture in the ship, flooding the compartment where the sailors' bodies were recovered. The crew managed to keep the ship from sinking, preventing further loss of life.
This loss is something we all feel."
—Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin, commander of 7th Fleet.

Stood way too many 00-06 watches to let an answer like that slide. It doesnt matter if comms aren't there. No fewer than ten watch standers fricked up for this to happen. There are way too many reliable methods to know where that ship is at all times.
The sensors and combat system knew where this tanker was hours before the collision. This is borderline neglegince on many watch standers.

Not even close. This is a catastrophic Watch failure. Millions of dollars of the best Navigational and Operations hardware on the planet, and this DDG cant navigate clear of a container ship?

I just can't believe this. Did the person watching radar fall asleep or what?

I still don't understand how this could have happened given how many people aboard are responsible for making sure this doesn't occur. A dozen people must have overlooked their duties.

Trump will make a statement about this soon. He's just got to tweet "witch hunt" a few more times first. Priorities and such...

The solution must be to increase our military budget.
What a fricking shame that 7 people died due to sheer incompetence

This exact scenario was my biggest nightmare about sleeping in berthing 1 on a DDG. I'm sickened that this happened.

RIP my brothers and sisters.

quote:Yeah, too many people on watch to make sure this doesn't happen. Makes no sense unless the mid watch crew all abandoned their stations.

Terrible. My prayers for the families of these sailors.

At least a dozen careers are over, and all will be lucky if they're not looking down the barrel of an Article 92.
