Another example of critics "getting it wrong" is The Lovers
Critics: 87% Public: 41%
I never use the critics score to decide on a movie. I have come to learn that is the public score is +80%, I'll probably like the flick as well.

The critics didn't help. Half of them gave it a thumbs down and the bad reviews were ruthless.

Everyone in my theater loved Pirates. I can't speak for Baywatch, but with both of these films, it seems like something you should know what you're getting into when you buy a ticket.

The average person is a fricking idiot. Critics aren't doing reviews to pander to retards.

100% agreed.
AND we know the critic has actually seen the movie, unlike retards that might vote on the audience score on rotten tomatoes, who might just be voting because Zach Efron is so fricking hot.

Well it's an uneven movie. We don't have to pretend it's a masterpiece.
The RT score is 51% and the audience score is 60% so it's not like there is a massive gap there. The previews just straight up didn't make anyone want to go see it. It's no secret that the advertising campaign was one of the worst ever done. They had no idea how to market it at all.
Studio execs bitching about and blaming the critics for Baywatch and Pirates 5 should be tossed out on the street. They are useless twats that can't take blame for their own failures.
I'm a fan of both Efron and Rock comedies. Even though I'm predisposed to liking them both I still thought the Baywatch previews were awful. It doesn't look like a movie that needs to be seen in theaters.
It's also not like Dwyane's non Fast and Furious movies have been dominating the US box office either. He is extremely likable but even his biggest fans surely have to admit that his movies tend to be fairly average. As for Efron, he has only been in two live action movies that made over $100 million in the US. He just isn't a huge draw.
Movies onto Pirates, why would anyone be shocked that it had it's lowest opening ever? It's the 5th film in a franchise that most people think has gotten worse w/each film. (personally I rank them 1,4,2,3) Johnny Depp is clearly no longer the star he once was due to many different reasons. Take your pick from his poor film choices, too many JD as random weird guy takes, general rich clueless douchbaggery w/his money issues, and the very real possibility that he is a woman abuser at worst and a massive a-hole when drunk at best.
The very fact that Disney kinda sorta barely showed Depp in the previews should have clued everyone into the fact that he is a little toxic right now.
I would expect audience scores to do well for both films b/c the people going to theaters to see those movies are predisposed to already liking them. Who goes to Pirates 5 opening weekend that didn't like most of the other four? Who goes to a movie version of a cheesy show like Baywatch unless they are big fans of The Rock?

Critics are becoming snobs
I don't think that's it so much as a certain segment of the population enjoys bad, lazy movies and try to pass themselves off as representative of "general audiences" in order to make themselves feel better about liking bad, lazy movies.

Exactly. Same for someone who gives a movie a 0 because they don't like Tom Cruise. Critics aren't paragons of filmic intelligence (they get shite wrong all the time), but they're still way smarter than the average joe. I'll trust them over an audience score any day (unless it's some unknown feminist film blooger). I had no doubt that Baywatch and Pirates would be bad, and the critic scores confirm it.

Critics are not smarter than the average moviegoer. They look at different things.
The primary functions of a film are to tell a story and to entertain the audience.
Critics don't typically care about the 2nd part.

They aren't wrong about Rotten Tomatoes black/white way of computing scores. That being said, they should also be mad at the movie going public who doesn't understand how to use Rotten Tomatoes.

I'm not saying the quality of movie isn't better, but if you honestly find Birdman more entertaining than smthg like Pirates then I would be forced to assume you're an incredibly mundane individual...... most people go for entertainment right? Id much rather go see Pirates in a theater than Birdman, regardless of the Oscar buzz and ratings.....and RT doesnt take that into account

This.
Critics rate movies on story, acting, and largely uniqueness...which are all legit qualities to have....but movies are meant for entertainment and thats generally disregarded

Thats ok. But are you aware that 95% of people would disagree with you....??? You just gonna claim that youre that much more intellectual than everyone else? Or admit that smthg like Birdman that critics fawn over isnt really that great to the majority of moviegoers??
Bottom line, people shouldnt rely on Rt to determine whether to go to a theater to view a certain movie, they should know on their own. But alas.....RT does have an effect
